I have a Sony Vaio desktop with XP. My DVD-CD

I have a Sony Vaio desktop with XP. My DVD-CD burner started getting balky so I replaced it with a Memorex DVD-CD burner. I can play DVDs and CDs and burn DVDs fine but none of my media players recognize the new unit as a CD burner. I tried putting in the old unit but now it is not recognized as a CD burner either. HELP!!!

Won't work. Neither of the media players where I used to be able to burn music CD's recognize either of my burners as CD burners, and Picture Tasks on the left side of the screen no longer says "copy to CD". Nope, I don't think it is going to be something that simple. But thanks for trying.

Have you tried burning a CD in the new drive? Because the drive is a DVD it will always be recognised as a DVD, but should work perfectly well with CDs both playing and recording.

OK, go to the properties of your CD drive in Device Manager and check that you have a recording tab, if so check that the "enable recording on this cd drive" box is ticked.

If you do not have a recording tab check this link for instructions

Restore Disks for Sony Vaio Notebook Model PCG-491L

Download the SP3 installation ISO. Save it to your Desktop. Download ImgBurn and save it to your Desktop. Double-click the installation executable for ImgBurn and click "Next." Follow the remaining onscreen prompts and click "Finish" to complete installation of ImgBurn. Insert a blank CD-R/DVD-R into your DVD drive. Open ImgBurn by going to "Start," "Programs" and "ImgBurn." Click "File," then "Browse for a source file." Navigate to your Desktop and select the SP3 ISO file. Click "Open." Click the blue "ISO to CD" button located on the bottom left of ImgBurn. The program will begin creating the Windows XP SP3 installation CD. This process may take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes to complete depending on the speed at which the CD-R/DVD-R is being burned. Click "OK" once the CD-R/DVD-R has finished burning. You've successfully created a Windows XP SP3 installation CD.

Replacement for Sony Vaio optical disk

Your computer is an older pentium 4 PC. As such it uses ATA / IDE - EIDE drives. These days stores sell SATA drives but IDE drives are still VERY COMMON. You can find tons of them on eBay or your local computer store (for much more than eBay). The original drive has a 24x CD reader, 8x CD-r writer and a 4x DVD reader. It does not write DVDs. You can buy any ATA/IDE drive you like and now you can probably afford a DVD burner too.

Help with my cd player/burner

There could be several things which are causing your CD burner not to act in the way it should.

I had a similar type problem after installing Windows XP, .Service Pack 3 onto my Sony VAIO model VGN-SZ330P.
The standard Windows burner kept saying there was no CD in the drive but it would play both CDs and DVDs.

I went looking for an alternative and now use IMGBURN which is a free lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application . You can find it at http://www.imgburn.com/.

I also installed CDBurnerXP which is another free application to burn CDs and DVDs, including Blu-Ray and HD-DVDs. It also includes the feature to burn and create ISOs, as well as a multilanguage interface. You can find it at http://cdburnerxp.se/en/home

The above does not tell you why your burner is having problems (and they could be numerous), it will certainly get the burner doing everything you need.
