Try going through the menu options and re-set the machine.
This is a common problem with these KitchenAid microwaves. Although their customer service will say they never heard of the problem, they are well aware of it. Ask to be transferred to their Safety department. They tried several times to fix mine (replaced control panel and switches), before they eventually gave me a full refund after more than 6 months of complaining about this very serious safety defect. The products should be recalled.
