Sometimes when I use a formula in Excel 2003 it will not calculate - it is as if the formula does not exist. an additional problem is that when the formula works it will not calculate several columns if one of those columns has a zero value. These problems are intermittant - they work on some sheets but not on others - can you advise please.

Make sure, when you entr a formula that you hit the ENTER key instead of just moving to tyour next cell. To have all numbers added or moved, use the"Special" application, or change the value. Such as -if you are working in text mode and you enter numbers, they are only numbers in text mode. They don't have a value. Correct the cells to reflect numbers. Right click, format cell - select what you want.

Hi gail876
When you write a formula
remember the following:

  • begin with an = sign
  • do not include space or any unwanted characters in the formula.
  • For example: =c3+d5 is correct: but c3 + d5 is not correct
  • capital letters OR small letters can be used in the formula.
If you write the formula correctly they will work
Division by 0 gives an error, but 0 can be added, subtracted, multiplied and divided
0/15 = 0 BUT 15/0 is ERR
eg: type 0 in C3 and 25 in C4
Now go to A10 and write the formula like this ( no spaces) =c3/c4 and press ENTER key
Now the cell A10 displays the answer 0
Go to A11 and type the formula =c4/c3 and press ENTER key.
Now the cell A11 displays the answer ERR caused by DIVISION by ZERO
If any cell shows ERR, then every cell which uses that cell in a formula displays ERR as well. So, ERR is propogated.

So, the lesson is write the formula correctly, and never write a formula where denominator is 0 (DIV by ZERO)
Hope this answer help you.
Have a good day.

What is formula to find percentage of females in my workplace?

To get around this, you can calculate your numbers as percentages first. For example, if you type the formula =10/100 in cell A2, Excel will display the result as 0.1. If you then format that decimal as a percentage, the number will be displayed as 10%, as you 'd expect.Aug 2, 2011

What are the formulas in grading the grades uisng microsoft excel

Formulas are used to specify calculations based on values in designated cells. Excel supports basic calculations as well as statistical, trigonometric and other specialized functions.

Formulas used in Excel must follow a certain syntax.

  1. All formulas begin with an equals sign (=).
  2. Some formulas use operands such as +,-, *,/ for addition, subtraction, multiplication or division.
For example, the formula =A1+A2+A3 would add the contents of cells A1, A2 and A3.
  3. Other formulas refer to different functions such as SUM, AVERAGE and others.
For example, the formula =SUM(A1:A3) would add the contents for the range A1 through A3.
  4. Formulas can be combined with operands.
For example, the formula =10*SUM(A1:A3) would add the contents cells A1 through A3 and multiply them by 10.
  5. Functions can be nested within each other.
For example, the formula =SQRT(10*SUM(A1:A3)) would take the square root of ten times the sum of cells A1 through A3. When functions are nested, it is important that the number of left parentheses match the number of right parentheses.

Whenever I work in excel 2007 file.It show compatibility mode n top and any formula are not working properly in file.

When you open Office 2003 files with Office 2007, it works in compatibility mode, so that if you open the files in earlier version (i.e. Office 2003 etc) there would be no issues (reverse compatibility with earlier versions.
Regarding formulas, rest assure that compatibility mode does NOT affect the calculations at all. All formulas are reverse compatible.
So, it is recommended that you may save the file in Word/ Office2007 format. Do review your formulas for errors (if any).

Excel formula

the formulae for the surface area of round disc is
pi * r * r
where pi=3.14 and r =radious of disc= diametre/2

for this 1st u have 2 calculate the radious of the disc that is
180/2=90mm
then convert it to  m by dividing 1000 ,so radious=90/1000=0.09 m
finally calculate the area= 3.14 * 0.09 * 0.09=0.025434 sq metres
for 38 disc multiply 38 with the above area that is
0.025434 * 38=0.966492 sq metres

in excel 2007  u can do it more easily by going 2 formulas tab.
Under formla tab click on engineering formula and  then convert
here u can convert from mm to m
after converting use the above formula i just told u.
