I had the same problem. I had a steam boiler and the water level in the glass gauge was below the top of the coil of the tank. remember water finds its own level, so it settled at the glass gauge level, therefore air got in coil.

to resolve problem : turned on manual water feed to boiler to raise water level. as water level got higher, let out water in hosecock between boiler and amtrol. amtrol noticed hot water reduction, circulator clicked on, boiler kicked on, turned off hosecock, turned off manual feed. I effectively bleed water out of line by running water out of amtrol as water feed in boiler increased water level above coil.

took a while to figure this out, so if this is the problem, dont feel to bad. keep water level of steam boiler high.

From what you are saying it sounds like an issue with either a circulator pump or a zone valve. It depends on what type of system you have ... if you have a circulator pump that only runs the Amtrol then that is probably bad. If you have a zone valve system then it is probably the zone valve if you still have heat for the rest of the house. If you have no space heating then it is probably the circulator pump.

Amtrol wh-7p

The tank rusting itself shut is almost an impossibility due to pressure. I would be inclined to believe that the controller is starting to fail and water that was way too hot entered the system and caused and overpressure issue that made the leak, When the pressure and temp dropped, the problem subsided. According to some of the threads that I have found on this, Amtrol is pretty generous about replacing the defective parts even when they dont have to. http://www.doityourself.com/forum/water-heaters/335226-amtrol-boilermate-problem.html

Wh 9L amtrol water heater..the water temp is too hot.. the heater is 10 yrs old is it possible to remove the temp probe and clean?

Amdrol makes indirect-fired water heater that gets heat from a boiler
http://www.amtrol.com/boilermate.htm

1) Pdf manual on amdrol website show a mixing valve that mixes cold water with the hot water so water temperature going to faucet stays the same:
http://www.amtrol.com/pdf/MC10169%20BMconstantempflyer.pdf
You set the temperature of the mixing valve.
You can also set up 2 sets of pipes ... one is connected to mixing valve that goes to sinks and tubs. The other pipe bypasses mixing valve sends hotter water to washing machine.

2) The manual for Amdrol:
http://www.amtrol.com/pdf/9040-586%2001_09%20BoilerMate%20Indirect%20IO.pdf
The new models has a temperature sensor that plugs into digital readout.
This is a thermistor sensor wire that can be ordered as repair part

3) Amdrol has e-mail address:
[email protected]

Amtrol Boiler Mate WH-7P (oil). We had a power failure, and when the power came back on the water heater did not. We've checked fuses, etc., but there doesn't seem to be power to the water heater. We can't...

If you check for power at the tank, (the black and white wires) you should read voltage, either 24 vac, or 120 vac, depending on how it is wired. If there is no power there, then you will have to chase power back to where you do have it. There is no fuse or reset button on this model.

AMTROL Boiler Mate - No hot water

Most likely either a bad controller (which is the little display you use to reset) or the temperature probe which is accessible on the underside of your tank. Sensor is a 2 wire probe in center of underside and easily replaced.
