Onkyo receiver tx-sr606 7.1 displays no signal error on start up when running hdmi from ps3 & DVR through receiver. Components work perfect when hooked up directly to tv, & had worked through receiver for the last 8 months with out a hitch. It has slowly been getting worse. It sometimes will begin to work if I wait long enough but now I have to run everything through my tv, & use an optical for my sound to the receiver. I've tried resetting the receiver, and have gone through every setting of all my components to make sure. The common denominator is the receiver. Can this be fixed? I see alot of this same issue with this reciever on the web.

Overview:
I’m writing this report to provide insight into a common Okyo issue. When my Onkyo receiver began to malfunction my first response was to search the web for answers. What I fond was conflicting information. While all system issue may be unique, I hope this report shed some light on the subject.

System Breakdown:
Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) TV: Samsung - LN52A750 - 52" LCD TV - 1080p
Broadcast: Comcast
Component 1: XBOX 360 Elite
Component 2: PS3 120GB
Cables: Mediabridge Ultra Series - 10ft High Speed HDMI Cable - Version 1.3 Category 2 - 1080p - Blu-Ray - PS3 - W/ Nylon Sleeve

Issue:
When I first setup my Onkyo receiver it worked perfectly. Over time, my TV would display “Searching for Signal”. After about a few minutes the receiver would detect the XBOX 360 and work fine. At first it was no big deal until the problem progressed. The receiver began to take longer and longer to detect the signal from the XBOX 360. Finally it would take up to 30 minutes or would not detect a signal at all.

Finally I went through the process of changing out the HDMI cables and switching ports. This did not work, so I call Onkyo. They walked me through a reset process that did not work. Finally they recommended that I take it to an approved Onkyo repair shop. Lucky for me there is a repair shop in the suburbs of Chicago about an hours drive from my location. There are not many approved Onkyo repair shops. Most people would have to ship their receiver to another state.

I took the receiver to the repair shop. They seem to have a nice little scam going on… Here is the scam.. They tell you there is a 3 to 4 week wait time (or longer) until they can even look at your receiver! BUT, if you want to put it on the “Priority List” you can pay a $30 non refundable fee not covered by your warranty. Then you would only have to wait about a week. Tell me, who would not op for the priority list when your entire entertainment system is managed by the receiver?!?!? So I payed the $30. About 4 days later I get a call from the repairman. He says, all the HDMI ports work but they don’t have an XBOX 360 to hook it up to. So he can’t validate the problem. After arguing with him for an hour and listening to him cry about how crapy Onkyo receivers are and how hard the company is to work with, he agreed to do some research into the problem. I told him many times, simply look on the internet many people are having the same problem. Onkyo has to know something about this.

Finally about a week later I get a call from the repair guy. He says he thinks he knows what the problem is. He has to order some capacitors and I could pay $45 for priority shipping. Umm wait one minute, I already paid $30 for priority service now you want me to pay more for shipping? No thank you! Over time I simply rewired my system to work without the receiver and to tell you the truth I almost forgot about the receiver. Finally I got a call from the repair shop about 2 months later saying I could come pick up my receiver. I talked to the repairman. He said the following…

Solution:
There are 4 capacitors that malfunction over time. It’s a common problem with Onkyo receivers. When the capacitors begin to malfunction you get intermittent signal response until it does not work.

He could not explain why the cable still worked (everything was hooked up with HDMI cables).

If you are experiencing this problem. I hope this helps save some time switching out cables and guessing why your system is not working.

Pretty much a poor quality receiver, I guess. I was hoping to find a different resolution. I've been having the same progressively worse trouble. Guess it's time to get the wallet out.
    Thank you.

Having the same problem. Worked for over a year, suddently three different DVD or Blu-Ray players SOMETIMES can't send video, sometimes audio, sometimes neither through receiver. Yet through it all, high def DVR/Sat works fine, never an issue.

Sorry I do not have a solution but a similar problem with my HT-S9100THXB when connected to PS3. It has been working fine for the past 7 months and slowlys started trouble connecting until a week ago when I could not even get it connected. When I connect it directly to TV, it works just fine. Have tried a lot of troubleshooting but to no avail. All the HDMI ports on the receiver are working fine when connected to another HDMI device and the PS3 is working fine when connected directly to the TV. Is it a firmware update that made the two not to shake hands?

Oynko....get yamaha or sony or pioneer

  • calvin_carna Jun 06, 2011

Yep... mine's been doing this for over a year. i found that leaving the receiver on will give me less problems. if I turn the receiver off, I could wait up to an hour or so before switching and playing with it between cable/sat, DVD, PS3, and Wii before one will actually work. Once one of them works, all of them seem to work though. Just never turn it off... you can turn your other components off, but if you turn the receiver off, it seems to have to "warm up".

HDMI flashing screen on Onkyo TX-SR674 receiver need advice on how to solve this problem

Hi Zach, you can try the following reset as this might be a glitch in the processor.

To do the reset you need to turn the receiver on, then on the front panel of the receiver press and hold the "VCR/DVR" button while doing that press the "STANDBY/ON" button. You will see the word "Clear" in the display screen and the receiver will go into standby mode. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR AUDIO & VIDEO ASSIGNMENTS ON THE RECEIVER PLUS YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR SPEAKER CONFIGURATIONS, SPEAKER DISTANCE AND ALL LEVEL CALIBRATION SETTINGS. YOU WILL ALSO LOSE ANY PROGRAMMED RADIO STATIONS IN MEMORY. Once the receiver goes into standby mode turn it back on and go thru the setup menu for all custom settings., Thanks, JT

Onkyo ht-r960

I had the same problem at 1 year after purchase. I was upset. In addition to looking here, I also emailed the company. They took a month to get back to me, but their solution worked perfectly.

"Try resetting the unit by pressing VCR/DVR and the standby/on button at
the same time on the front of the unit while it is turned on. The unit
will display CLEAR and shut down. All settings will be erased. "

All my components connect without any problem now. Hope this helps.

No image/sound when sony ps3 is connected to onkyo 875

I've had problems with my Onkyo receiver too.

Firstly i suggest going into the Onkyo setup menu. Make sure that in "source settings" i think that's the menu option) that the input e.g. dvd is set to receive HDMI. then go into the settings for DVD and ensure that resolution is set to auto, then go into the monitor out settings (option 1 on main seyup menu) and make sure that main monitor out is set to HDMI and auto resolution.

hope this helps,

Onkyo TX-SR606 Reciever - 20 sec after power on, screen is green

The HDMI version in your receiver is 1.1 or 1.2 which will not pass video as it should. It's not Onkyo's firmware at issue, it's HDMI and in all receivers up to 2008 model year this is a very heated problem! The only fix is to run FIOS directly to the TV via HDMI and run it's audio to your receiver with Digital Coaxial or Optical. Hope this helps

1080P video via HDMI generates awful interference

Your Plasma's native resolution is 720P. Go into the Blu Ray's output setup. you can choose 480p 480i 720p 1080i and 1080p. Set it for 720p that should clear up the issue. You may have to run Component directly to the TV since you only have 1 HDMI input and you can run Digital coax or optical to your AV receiver for audio. On a 50" TV the difference between 720p and 1080p using "GOOD" cables cannot be seen by the human eye. Above 50, yes it is noticeable.
Hope this helps.

Don't want to use receiver to turn Plasma on via Verizon DVR

You can not have a signal from cable/satelite TV when reciever is OFF.The only way is reconnect by using defferent setup configuration to illiminate the receiver. In that case you well see just regular Tv program but you should connect antena to your TV.
