I was given an older kenwood chef (500 watts). When you turn it on especially on higher speeds i gives off a burning smell. Is the motor dying or does it just need servicing after not being used for a number of years?
Just bought a second hand kenwood chef which started smoking and smells a bit of burning. I instantly turned it off. have I bought a dud or can anyone help?Just bought a second hand kenwood chef which started smoking and smells a bit of burning. It may be the motor but it is most likely a burnt out capacitor, these can be replaced for around £30. It is not a DIY job unless you know a qualified electrician as soldering is involved. Best to take it in for repair if you think it is worth it.

A failed SCR or triac will not always show visually any sign of failure. Chances are good that is all that is wrong. If mixer had been plugged in when it got wet, that is all it takes. Also check the transient voltage supressors if the chef has them. They would be identified on the circuit board. as TVS or MOV along with a number. Only number to use is the one on the component.
If you can find ratings for the old devices, just matching the basic ratings should do. Just guessing, but the SCRs should be 20 amp and 400 volt, If the old ones are a lower rating than my guess, there is no problem with using the higher ratings, if my guess is low, go with the original's ratings. Manufacturer of device does not matter as long as ratings are at least comparable.
hi its not necessarily the motor but could be some capacitors on the speed control unit ( the control knob is attached to it) spares are reasonable to buy .you can find a dealer from kenwood.co.uk website..
there is a kit on ebay for both 701 and 901 kenwoods requires use of soldering iron do a search for Kenwood motor repair it is unlikely to be the motor usually the speed contoller components
Hi sometimes, its not the motor, maybe its the speed control, in this model same A701 its centrifugal system, if the capacitor or resistor not working fine, give this smell . you must give your Kenwood for repair or check
I have just had the exact sme problem.
It is caused by a 1 watt resistor on the board.
You will also find that very possibly the large capacitor, a 0.1uF, has aso burnt out. This capacitor would have cracked open down the side and that is where the smoke came from.
parts can be replaced by a repair man and possibly a better solution is to have the board replaced, They are availiable still.
