The spring is one of the balancers that keeps the motor and drum assembly from moving around too much. It can easily be replaced if you look underneath the machine.

Earlier whirlpool tubs had 4 screws under rubber plugs that unfortunately rusted if you manage to get them out then the complete top lifts of the base section
later models just prise apart as they have eliminated the screws
there are manuals on line to download
COOLANT (COLORED?) CHECK THE FOLLOWING:
1. ALL RADIATOR AND HEATER HOSES FOR LEAKS OR LOOSE CLAMPS
2. LOOK FOR A CRACKED OVERFLOW BOTTLE
3. MODERN WATER PUMPS CONTAIN A "BOTTOM SIDE" SMALL WEEP HOLE THAT WILL START LEAKING WHEN THE SEAL AND BEARING ARE FAILING
4. ALSO CHECK RAD CAP, RADIATOR SIDES AND BOTTOM TANKS FOR LEAKAGE, AND WEEPING AROUND THERMOSTAT COVER
Check 4 the connections of water pipes... for leakage..!!!! if leakage is found in specific spot.... contact The nearby whirlpool service station..!!!! Also contact customer care online at "http://www.whirlpoolindia.com/" or "http://www.whirlpoolindia.com/CustomerCare.aspx"
it sounds as if one of your springs has broken or become detatched from the outside of the drum. open the top cover and have a look. ensure the power is switched off.

It is possible the rear counter balance spring has come off or the hole that the spring hooks onto has rusted. If the spring hook end has broken off you can often just bend a new hook part with a couple of pairs of pliers. If the hole in the washer frame has rusted, you will need to drill a new hole to hook the rear balance spring into. If the spring "took off" somewhere and is now missing, time for anew spring.
The tube from the lower water collector that feeds the upper is detatched or split. Take off R/H side panel as you look at machine and at the bottom you will see a spring. Behind this is the lower water tank (very small) - it has two electrical connectors on it, There should be a black plastic tube attached to the top, this is the tube that feeds the upper condenser container.
You may have an article of laundry trapped between the drum and the tub, putting a heavy load on the belt and motor. On the other hand, it maybe that you need a new Boot Seal and Tub bearing due to leakage and corrosion.
