There is no way to reset the ink levels on this cartridge type yet. Any replacement chips on the internet are violating patent law. Once the chip tells the printer it is empty it will not print no matter how much ink is left in it. There is always a lag time between the introduction of a new cartridge type and the ability to fill it properly. For refills I would recommend Cartridge World when this cartridge type can be refilled.
1/2 right - 1/2 wrong. Cartridges can be refilled (have done successfully) but have not found a way to re-set level indicators. So live without the indicator (will always show low / empty) but save tons. Do recommend that you run the alignment and head cleaning features.
I had similar problems. I researched the net, watched ALL the UTubes and even tried taping the chip connections one at a time to see if that would change anything. Nata! Conclusion, the printer will not print from a refilled cart after remove and replace with same one. I refilled my carts after becoming out of ink. They were starter carts with chips. After they would not work, I repeatedly did all the alignment, cleaning, higher cleaning, and so on, They would never pass an alignment.
I took the carts out, took out the printhead and saw what appeared to be gummy ink in the printhead ink tunnels. I cleaned the head using WD40 and it worked quite well on cleaning. Thinking that would help, no, nata !!
The way I refilled the carts was drill 5/16" from the end of top from (cartridge clipend) about the first indentation. (Afterwards I cut off the top and saw that you need to offset your drilling of that hole just a mite because just underneath there is a plastic center ridge.) The tank is under that hole. I really don't see how the ink gets from the tank to the sponge unless there is a path I could not find and it siphons the ink, the tank is solid wall from bottom to top.
My only problem I think, was that I REMOVED the carts to refill and the printer sensed that and saw the replaced refills as "used" or "missing" depending upon what mode the printer was in then.
I read several places where it was said to "turn off" the ink level. That is useless as all that is is communications to the computer "HP Solutions" software.
I ordered new carts, and after all the gorilla treatment to this printer, put the new ones in and viola !!, everything came back on.
What I plan to do, with these new carts, when they become low on ink maybe one-third, I will refill then with the carts still IN the printhead. I believe it will not be hard to drill the holes with the carts still installed at the hole I described first.
Will try to remember to have an update then.
One PS, when I removed the old carts the printer of course was powered up. As far as I know, there is no way to remove the carts with the power off because the printhead moves to the right under the printer carriage. I say this because maybe if you could remove the carts with the power off (or maybe it needs to be unplugged), the printer would never know they HAD BEEN REMOVED and REPLACED with the same refilled cart. There may be a way but you would need to cut away some plastic carriage cover under the lid. Anyone on this angle?

Actually you can, take the cartridge out with power off. 1st With power still on, open lid where cartridges are, they will move to center, then pull the power cord out of plug, don't press power button. then you'll be able so slide printer head by hand back and forth, and i did refill my 920 cartridges on my 6500 E709n wireless, i just ignore empty messages, and printer printing excellent, no problems.

JUST REFILLED MY HP 6500 BLK 920 CARTRIDGE, HOW DO I RESET LOW LEVEL ON INDICATOR??
My 6500 I refilled many times, the expiration date shown on screen is 3 years ago. I didn't modifiy the chip. I'm using a black cartridge I bought after the OEM died. After refilling ink, in order to get mine to print, I open the HP Solution Center software, click on the settings wrench (lower right), click printer toolbox, click (middle tab) Device Services, click Clean Printheads. Works everytime!
