New computer won't recognize my Firelite, works on old computer

I am trying to transfer my files from my smartdisk firelite to my new sony vaio laptop. When I plug the firelite in, the computer won't recognize it. When I plug it into my old dell computer it recognizes it right away. Any suggestions?

You need drivers for USB, if you remember when you bought smartdisk you got the installation disc, that you now need for a new computer.

Try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this data recovery program to recover your files.

Turn the computer off without the external hard drive being plugged in.
plug the external hard drive in a usb port, power up, the systems post boot up will find the drive and inform windows what hardware is installed.
When windows boots up, it will look at all the hardware and find the external hard drive, when windows finishes booting up you should be able to see the drive in my computer.

If you can't access your files, data recovery software can help.I used this one called Tenorshare Data Recovery to retrieve files off crashed HDD and it worked.
If needed, you can download it and scan your hard drive to preview whether your files can be recovered.BTW, you can get it from
Data Recovery for Mac OS X
Data Recovery for Windows OS

How to transfer 57 gigs from a mac to firelite xp.

The hard drive maybe formatted in Windows NTFS format and the MAC cannot see this formatted hard drive.
If you only wanr to use this hard drive on a MAN then you need to format this hard drive with your MAC.
If you want to exchange files between your MAC and a PC then you need to format the hard drive on a PC in FAT32. The MAC can read and write to a FAT32 formatted hard disk.

MY COMPUTER DIED. HOW DO I TRANSFER THE FILES FROM MY VERBATIM SMARTDISC FIRELITE 160 GB, USBFLB160' TO ANOTHER COMPUTER? THANKS...........................JOHN NICKERSON

It depends on how you copied your files to the SmartDisk.
If you used the "normal" method of copying files/folders in Windows, then just connect it to the new computer.
If you used some "backup" software from Verbatim to write "backup" files,
then you'll need to install that software on the new computer,
in order to retrieve from those "backup" images.

I transferred files from one computer on my Firelite to my new Imac. If I try to change file names etc I get a message saying I don't have permission to do that. Why?

The files are secured for each user with certain rights. To change the file names you must be logged into the file owner's account. At that point, you can either change the name or you can change the file's permissions allowing anyone (everyone) full rights.

Erase Firelite backups so drive is clean and I can start over

Empty the Recycle Bin -- the files that you "erased" were _only_ moved from their location into the Recycle Bin -- they still occupy just as much disk-space.

Smartdisk firelite won't be recognized on desktop-will on laptop

You have not said what system your computers are wroking under I would think your Sony is XP/2000 But the Dell is Win 98 - An I right? IF this is the case it means the drive has been formatted to NTFS which be read only on XO/2000 machines. The thing to do here is to load all your filed onto the Sony Then refomat to 32 bit - this makes a universal device but your Dell if I am right will not see the lappies stuff Come back with more detail
