Step 1: The Ubuntu Linux operating system is available either with or without a desktop environment. The version with the desktop environment is meant for personal use and includes word processing, email and graphic editing software. The version without the desktop environment is called "Ubuntu Server." The server version does not come with any graphical software or productivity software. There are three different desktop environments available for the Ubuntu operating system. The default is the Gnome desktop. The other two are the KDE and the XFCE desktop environments.
Log into the server. Type the command "sudo apt-get update" to update the list of software packages available. Type the command "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop" to install the Gnome desktop. Type the command "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" to install the XFCE desktop. Type the command "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop" to install the KDE desktop. This is perfectly normal for this server. It powers on, the fans come on all at once and then, dial back down to a loud whisper. All Dell 1850, 2850, 1950, and 2950 servers do the same thing. It does no harm to the server whatsoever and is a normal part of the initial power up process.
It sounds like a hard disk has failed or fallen out of sync.
This can be a serious problem if not addressed ASAP.
Call Dell, they have lifetime phone support for their servers.
Write down the Express Service Code and Service Tag number that is on the server chassis before you call. This is the last number I used for server support: (800) 945-3355 If it doesn't work you should be able to find a valid number at support.dell.com
You can either do this in the BIOS or (easier) just run a Linux installer (such as Ubuntu) and it will offer to do it for you when it sees Windows-formatted partitions.
