Bose 321 DVD Stuck Won't Open

Hello,

My Bose 321 will not play the dvd I just put in it. I tried to eject it, and it wont do that. I tug on the drawer a little and now the Bose power won't turn on.
How do I get the DVD out of the system!? It isn't my dvd and I need to return it. Hopefully without wrecking the $1000 system.

Can you help me?

I have the exact problem on January 7, 2008.

    same problem here!

  • Rhubarb Pie Feb 12, 2008

My 3-2-1- dvd tray suddenly stopped ejecting. I contacted Bose who wanted me to pay $125.00 and send the unit to Mass. I read some previous blogs and took apart the case. Mine didn't have screws it was integrated hidden clips and was a delicate process. I manually released the tray. Everything worked fine except, when the tray closed again it would not open. I believe the motor that opens the door has lost power and cannot seperate the magnet that keeps the tray in place while a dvd is playing. The Bose repair tech confirmed this theory and told me that the motor could not be replaced and that any replacement dvd drive had to come from Bose. They are made specifically for this application. Off the shelf will not work.

I have the same problem with my 3-2-1 II DVD player - and I also had the same problem with my last 3-2-1 (pre-II) system. Arrggghh. Won't buy one of these again. In the meantime, though, Iron Lung's solution worked instantly - thank you so much!

Where i the power adapter on the system? Which chord do I unplug from the back?

  • michellese Jan 31, 2009

I cannot get the disk out.  It stopped randomly when a dvd was playing and now it will not open but it says it is, and then i will hit the button and it will say closing.  Powering off doesnt work, it says its opening but its not.  this machine is so temper mental and sensitive.  its doesnt read random dvds.  youd think for the money i paid it would at least play the dang movies.

I was playing a dvd when the picture started to freeze. When I tried to eject the dvd the door woudn't open. The display reads "opening" but nothing happens. I powered the player off & on and still I can't get the dvd out of the player. Help!

  • roll-5 Apr 27, 2009

I had same problem, dvd would run but nothing going on, it would not eject, seemed like same problem everyone else is having, tried to pull it open and guess broke it. I think it is a piece of junk for as much as it costs, have had the 3-2-1 for several years and have hardly played the dvd. When I called said it would cost $150. to mail it in. I think they should have a recall on all the dvds and have them fixed free. That is just my opion, if they are to continue to sell such things that are very touchy.

  • psion May 07, 2009

Used the fix with the manual release on the front of the drive and got the stuck disc out., Put it all back together but now the mechansim wont open at all, even with no disc in the trasnsport!!!

This can happen if the disc has been put in upside down accidentally, if both sides are highly reflective (e.g. blank recording discs). If so, you need to get the system to eject the system before it attempts (and fails) to read the wrong side of the disc:
On the back of the Acoustimass module (sub woofer) is a power switch. Use this to the turn the system off and wait 30 seconds. Switch it back on, the media centre flashes up "Bose 321" - press the eject button firmly once as soon as this disappears. If this works, contact Bose with the serial number from the media centre to see if the system needs a (free) software update (a disc they send in the post) - just in case the system is having general disc reading issues.

However, it may be that the drive has failed - it's a mechanical part in a mass produced system so this is not unreasonable, just disappointing. But because you have bought a premium system, the company will rush to help you - call them for a repair and explain you need the disc back urgently. they'll probably arrange an urgent, fast turnaround repair....

Did just what was said and it WORKED. Thank you, thank you. wonder if I still need a software upgrade. Have had mine for about 10 years.

  • vnarra63 Jan 17, 2011

I also had the same problem. Back of the acoustimass module, I simply disconnected the power, waited for 30 seconds and reconnected it. After the unit displayed Bose-1-2-3, I pressed the Eject button and it opened. Thank you so much.

  • Anonymous Feb 23, 2013

THANK YOU!! I had a disc stuck, and panicked until I found these posts. Disconnected the power, waited, & reconnected it - my Bose spent 15 seconds automatically attempting to eject the disc, and finally succeeded... yay! Needless to say, that CD has been disposed of.... :) Can't tell you how much I appreciate your advice.

Worked for me, too. Thanks, saved waiting thru the weekend to call Bose for help.

I followed the suggestion above which wrote that by turning it off and on may work. So..... I unplugged the power adapter from the unit and waiting 10 seconds.  Pressed the POWER ON/OFF button and waited until a few seconds passed, pressed the Eject button and after waiting for about 2 seconds, it worked.
Thank you.

Simple solution:
unplug the bose from the wall outlet.
Wait thirty seconds.
Plug it back in (if you've waited long enough, the display will light up and say "BOSE 321" or something similar)
Press eject.
Voila! It should work. (If necessary, do it again)

Another simple fix is to unplug the dvd player for 30 seconds or so.  When the Bose Lifestyle name comes up just press the eject button, after a couple seconds the tray should open up. I hope this helps you.

So I ran into this issue on Saturday night. Being a techy person I wasn't afraid to go in and fix it myself! That and I am impatient.....lol

Turn the box over and there are 6 screws holding the top on. Unscrew all of them.
Gently pull the top of the box off
You will see a small form factor motherboard under a tv capture card and next to the dvd drive. Remove the tv capture card and unplug it from the motherboard.
Gentrly pull the front of the dvd case open to unseat it from the drive (this takes patience and a soft touch)
Remove the front panel of the bose system by gently prying it apart
lift up the DVD drive (its a 5 1/4" drive like is in your computer)
On the front of the drive is a small pinhole. Take a paperclip and shove it in there. This will trigger the manual release for your dvd player.
Take out the dvd and put it all back together.

Now comes the interesting questoin - can you replace the DVD player with one more accepting of self recorded DVDs? Can you replace it with a HD or Blueray player? Im thinking I need to find out!!!!

  • rookiefix44 Sep 05, 2011

The DVD drive would not lift out so I had to remove 3 additional screws in the front to remove the front plate and then I could see this extremely small hole to shove a pin through to manually eject the disk (and by manual, there is no power...the pin manually pushes something inside to make it come partially out). When reassembling, there will likely be a wire that is pulled loose from the display that you'll need to reconnect as well, but it's not hard to find. This was my first electronics dig to fix something and after it was all back together, it worked like a champ!

Here's my issue with it. My parents have a very lightly used first generation Bose 3-2-1 that suddenly would not open the disc tray (no disc in the drive). I tool the casing apart, and opened up the disc drive. Come to find out, the motor that clamps and un-clamps the disc-spinning motor to the plastic spindle must've weakened, because when the drive is closed, the the mechanism clamps. When it is opened, the mechanism tries to un-clamp, but the magnet that holds the plastic spindle won't let go - the motor isn't powerful enough to pull the clamp free. This causes the tray to attempt and then fail to open.

I took out the plastic spindle and put some very small circles of paper where the magnet on the clamp connects and put a few dots of superglue. This means that there's a few layers of paper between the magnet and the spindle, which allows the mechanism to unclamp freely now. I was able to successfully watch disc 1 of Firefly. (as an aside, I also tried connecting another PC DVD drive and the Bose system refused to power-on correctly. It may work on other drives, but I had no luck with it)

However, when I went to turn the Bose system off, the drive opened and then it powered off. I'm not sure if this is related or if the gear works that run the tray are misaligned.

The clamping problem isn't with the magnets - it's the drive belt. They get weak and slippery after so long. Any belt of proper size will work.

Bose 321 II dvd drawer won't open, fixes here & elsewhere not working. I put in a recorded dvd. It tried to read it, & never gave me the not supported msg as I started trying to eject it...

Hi Donna,

Please do be frustated.

Your lovely Bose has problem with its mechanism that cause load / unload totally out of order. If you hear some noise while you turn on the bose or when you hit some buttons, it is telling us the motor still work. Now we need to check the broken gears ( or other mechanism linkage).
If you able assemble this Bose, go ahead to find and fix it mehanism ( you may need some parts replacement.

Note : Be carefully with its laser lens while power on ( avoid direct contact to your eyes).

Best luck,

normal issues with cd/dvd trays - gear/rubber of the tray transport worn out.

manytimes it helps if you always keep a cd/dvd in the tray (don't keep the tray empty)

it may also help if you can keep the bose 321 vertical.

DVD/CD door stuck on Bose 3 2 1

On the 321 systems turn off the power and unplug the power cord from the bass module. Wait 5 minutes and plug it back in. Then, simply hit the "stop/eject" button on the media center itself (do not turn it on first)..this should release the tray unless there is a mechanical failure inside the tray mechanism itself.

Thanks to Matthew O;Neil for the the tip,...Italo

On a Lifestyle system with a tray that won't open, try this: Turn off the power to the system and unplug the power cord to the back of the media center itself. Wait 5 minutes and plug it back in. Then, simply hit the "open/close" button on the media center itself (do not turn it on first)..this should release the tray unless there is a mechanical failure inside the tray mechanism itself.

If this does not work, then call Bose when you are home with the system at 800-367-4008.
