Speakers had been working fine for about a month. But recently they have started crackling when I increase the volume above about 1/3 and cut out every couple of seconds if i increase the volume to 1/2.

Uninstall and reinstall the sound driver and see if it works if that does not work try the same speakers to different sys. and check if it works the port of the sound card might have gone bad and if the same problem with other sys. speakers had gone bad.

Sound crackle on warmup, now no sound at all

Turn your volume up slowly if you can hear audio. If no audio at all. Could be loose/cut wiring on the speakers. If both speakers are dead could be fault on amplifier side.

Speakers crackling and making a 'clicking' sound when volume high

The cable you are using to connect to the speakers could be duff or the connectors could just be dirty.  clean the connectors and push it in and out of the socket repeadedly to ensure you have a good connection.  Or you could try a different cable.
