Nikon D40 will not take a picture.

The camera turns on as normal but when I try to take a shot it will not function. The battery is fully charged and the camer is set on automatic. The flash will pop up but the shutter will not click.

My D40 will not take a photo when the shutter is pressed. I reset the camera. I read the technical pages in the manual but nothing worked. I also tried using another focus mode.

I have the same problem, the flash comes up but it will not take the picture in automatic, but it will take it if i change to manual and focus myself.

Camera turns on and acts like it wants to take picture but when you press the button it makes and awful noise like a rat scurrying. I can take pictures on manual but I can not totally focus in.

  • acmm Mar 05, 2008

Same problem. Camera is ready, but makes quiet scraping sounds when the button is presses. The manual does not deal with this problem.

  • nicole2316 Mar 09, 2008

Mine still does the noise and will not take on Manual. I do not see a error in the top of screen. Now what? Has anyone found a solution on this matter?

  • Anonymous Mar 15, 2008

Same problem, camera shows that the battery is fully charged, the flash pops up, but the shutter dosen't release.

same problem, when setting is on auto focus, it will not take a picture under any circumstances

  • kmac78 Nov 14, 2008

My Nikon D40 camera will not take pictures. I press the shutter button and it makes the same rat scurrying sound someone else described. If I zoom out all the way it will take a picture sometimes, but when I zoom in it will not take the picture. This happened a few months ago and then it just stopped, and it worked for a while. I tried the solution of blowing on the memory card and making sure the lens is properly connected with no luck. When this is going on, it doesn't matter what setting it is on, it just doesn't work.

  • labfamily May 02, 2009

I tried solution #1 but I don't understand what he means by twist end of lens until it locks. I have taken off the lens, put it back on. It still will not take pictures. The flash will pop up but it won't take pic.

I fixed it!! Turn the lens to Manual mode (moving to M). Twist the very tip of the lens till it unlocks.

If you twist the lens on the end far enough on the end to the right you will find it "locks". This is what is causing the screeching sound,, it's locked and can't auto focus. Twist the very end to the left till it releases. This fixed it for me.

When you pusht o take a photo does it display an error on the top screen? make sure the lens is locked in including checking the ring on the lens next to the camera base.

Chuck,

Sounds like your lens might be set to M rather than M/A. Try that and let me know.

Pictures too dark. Shutter operating too slowly.

Are you in auto mode? If it is manual then it is possible that the settings are not correct for the light. You can look at the meter to see what the camera thinks about the exposure.

It sounds as if your subject is too dark. Does this happen when the area is brightly lit? Does the flash fire?

When switching camera on it won't turn on

It could be the battery is not fully charged and the other thing is the main switch in the camera could be bad .

If any further assistance needed contact .

Also it could be a main circuit bad .

I think my flash is too bright?

Make sure that the exposure compensation is at zero. If that does not work, make sure that the flash is on automatic brightness. Check the manual if you do not know how to do either one of these.

You probably have "bracketing" turned on. In your menu settings, search for bracketing and make sure it is off.

Get the kit changed. That should not happen right out of the box, but make double sure the next time around, you charge the battery completely before using it the first time. Not doing this can cause problems.
