Last time i switched off my DELL D600 Latitude running with windows xp professional sp 2 it was running very good. But today as i started my window it was getting slow when i execute any program even task manager wasnt working. So once when it competely hanged i switched it off straight away and when i switch in on again it took very long time after it showed me DELL logo and then after that black screen just before windows starts loading it said ''C:/windows/system32/ntoskrnl.exe'' is missing. i tried everything safe mode, last good configuration but nothing worked. Then I started installing new window and it dint allowed me to format C drive. After very long time after trying again and again the installation of window started in C drive but in wasnt able to make the very first folder in C:/windows/system32. So i installed my window in D to just check whats going on. i finished installing and then tried to format the C drive from my computer but it is saying that ''window cannot complete formatting the drive''. I dont know what to do now. I want my window again in C drive. I even deleted both the partitions and then tried to install in C drive but it dint worked. On my last attempt i thought of keeping 2 windows. i tried installing in C as well and somehow it the CD was successful to copy all the files in C drive but when the CD started the window, again that black screen appeared and after 2 minutes it said ''C:/windows/system32ntoskrnl.exe'' is missing. But the fact is that when CD was copying the files to C drive all files were successfully copied and there was no file skipped.
I got 1 GB ram and 1.70ghz proccessor in this 6 year old laptop. i know its old but dont have money to buy a new one. please help me !!!
Sounds like the hard drive might be going bad....but you did say everything copied okay.. maybe you could try installing a different operating system on the partition or using an ubuntu live disk or another utility to reformat the partition before reinstalling windows. Is data loss an issue? Let me know if I can clarify anything.

first of all bro i am not a computer techi !! I dont know where to get Unbuntu from. And i have never used it before. Yesterday night i dint slept because i was solving this problem. I insalled Killdisk software to format my C drive. It hardly completed 2% formatting and wasnt responding at all so i closed it from task manager. Then i tried to format C drive from windows formatting tool( by right clicking on C drive) and amazing it said "formatting complete" and the drive was empty. Then i tried to install the window again and when all files got copied on C drive and the window started the very first thing i saw on my laptop screen was " disk read error". I was shocked. After that i tried everything but nothing worked. Then i deleted both my drives and then made C drive = 12GB and D drive = 26GB and then when i installed window in D drive then it was successful. Now it is running allright. But the thing is that i can excess my C drive but i cant format it. And window is still in D drive.
i am very afraid of doing anything adventurous to this old laptop because that disk read error just scared me alot.
And i forgot to mention one thing that when i said that it C drive was successfully formatted and i tried to install new window in my C drive, i dont know what happened and my D drive window disappeared. It was showing that the some space was still occupied in D drive but it was unable to boot from D drive.
I m afraid that if i tried to install any other window in C drive the same thing will again happen and i wont be able to do anything this time.
I would like to say thanks for your response and it could be of great help for me but this notorious laptop wont let me do anything.
If anything you can still help your response is welcome.
thanks !
