1.Find and read the instructions carefully before doing anything. Become familiar with the instructions so that even if you do not remember everything, you have a basic idea of how to proceed before you start. Look on the manufacturer's website for directions if you have lost the original instructions. 2
Assemble the parts. Make sure you have all of the parts and all of the screws that are listed in the instructions, and that they are in working order. Lay out the parts so that everything is where you need it and you can clearly see all of the parts. 3
Set up the head and foot boards and attach any stabilizing bars. Some springs attach directly to the bed and some are movable, so you will either attach the spring board or you will attach the pieces that the spring board sits in if they are not part of the crib already. If the spring board is movable, put it on the setting that is the correct height for your infant (higher for newborns, lower for older babies). 4
Attach the back of the crib that is stationary and does not move up or down. The front part of the crib often is adjustable and lowers and raises back to a stable position. You may have to install rails for this part of the crib, then install the front portion onto the bars and then screw the bottom of the rails into the crib. 5
Put the mattress in the crib and make sure it fits. Test the crib by feeling to make sure that it is steady and not going to come loose. Make sure all of the screws and bolts are tight and that none are sticking out in any way. Make sure there is nothing that could hurt the infant such as any sharp edges or splinters

do you have a bar on the bottom of the side of the crib - if you do, all you do is push it in and the rail will come down. If you don't have this rail, then you are missing that part.

i've pasted them below. You can make it a toddler bed without a side rail just by removing the movable side of your crib, and you can install the side rail instead of the movable side if you want it to look a little more finished and help keep your child from rolling out of the bed.
