I've recently noticed a wide dark horizontal line approx 1/4 of the way down from the top of my screen display. The camera is kept in my home office, has not been dropped, gotten wet or exposed to extreme temps or humidity. The still photos come out fine but the videos I take have the line going through them. I played with it this evening and notice that the line moves down to about 1/4 of the way up from the bottom of the screen when I press the shutter in picture mode and stays there while the image is captured. In video mode the line moves down initially when the shutter is depressed but then goes back up and stays until the shutter is pressed again.

Your camera has a defective CCD imager. Please return the camera prepaid to Canon in New Jersey, they are replacing the CCD at no charge to the customer. This is a known issue and is resolved by many of the manufacturers using the Sony CCD element in their cameras at no charge. Good Luck my friend. Joe Weibel customelectronics.org

Visit the site named 'Electro-help' for more details. Click this link. View it in "Timeslide" or "Flipcard" option, which can be selected from the drop down box menu by the [Sidebar] tag, at the top left corner of the display window. Problems in A85

It appears the CCD image sensor is going bad. Both these cameras are specified in Canon's technical notice regarding this issue. If Canon determines that this is the problem (and almost certainly it is), they will repair your cameras at no cost, regardless of warranty status. If you're not in the US, contact your regional Canon service facility.
