Sharp aquos lcd screen goes blank

I was having these same problems with the screen going black, and i found that when i hit the back of my tv it would work sometimes. so, i improvised on some of the advice on this page and so far no problems. here is what i did (its very easy):

1. lay the tv on the floor and take off the back panel. (i think 12 screws)

2. on the right side of the tv (as you are looking at the back) you will notice a large metal covering that is held in place by 6 screws. unscrew these and remove the metal cover.

3. you will notice that the three screw holes on the left side of the board have some sort of metal or solder around them, in sort of a star pattern. when i looked closely i noticed that most of the metal (solder) was tarnished, or kind of blackened. (this must mean that the ground screws werent getting a good connection and this would explain why it would work sometimes when i hit it because it would vibrate the screws enough to get a good connection! )

so, take a pencil eraser and erase all the black or tarnish off the metal surrounding the screw holes. thats it! (to be safe i took some sandpaper and cleaned up the screw holes on the back of the metal covering, but i dont know if that was necessary)

at this point i followed another gentleman's advice to do a hard reset. this involved unplugging the 8 connections although i dont know if this was really necessary because i believe my problem was a ground issue. i did it just to be safe. his advice is on this site if you want to do this step.

4. i put everything back together and it worked! i performed a soft reset at this point which puts your tv back to factory settings. just go to menu>setup>reset>return to factory settings? yes
this will turn your tv off and back on. that's it. so far so good for me.

The problem is most likely the the screws are loose on the inverter boards. The screws must be tighted as they provide the ground to the inverter bds. The inverter boards are undet the shields on both sides of the unit after pulling the back cover. One way to make sure that you are losing back lights and not video is when your picture goes black, shine a flash light on the screen at an angle and will see the video is still there. This mean the back lights are out. If you do not see the video it may be another problem

For me it's the connected cables. Remove all other connections execept cable TV and s-video to PC, it seems to be working now.

My 3 year old aquos began loosing video some months ago. Power off/on would bring video back for a while. The interval between loss of video began becoming shorter. Finally pulled the back off and found that the circuit board, at the right side, with what appeared to be relays, to someone in another post, is evidently the lamp driver board. Disconnected the connectors to the board, removed it from the metal base and found oxidation between the board and the base. Cleaned the oxidation from the copper lands on the board and on the base where the board is mounted using a small wire brush and scotch brite, cleaned the surfaces with alcohol and reinstalled making sure the screws were tight. This was done 4 days ago and have had no video shutdown so far.

I Fixed this problem and so can you.

This is NOT a hardware problem but a software problem and the key to fixing it is to reset the glitch.

The first thing to try is the Soft reset , try as much as possible to get the display to stay on for a couple of minutes in order to follow the on screen comands.

While the screen is lit and on screen items are visable:
Press : menu > go to setup> scroll down to Reset > cofirm return to factory preset values by choosing yes and enter.
This should do it.
If not then a Hard reset is requiered , it will take more time and efforts but it is as simple and it will work as it did for me.

I had the same problem with my 32" sharp Aquos that I purchased from costco about 2 years ago,
The problem was intermitent for a couple of weeks and then escolated to the point of not being able to wach anything for more then few seconds before the screen turns black.

I called a TV repair guy and had him come to my house to check it out , he opend it in my living room while I was watching , checked the electric relays by feeling them with his fingers to see that they are "cliking" and tapped on some of the components with the back of his screw driver to see if he would get any reaction from the screen, charged me $100 and concluded that he can't see anything wrong therfore it must be either the electronic board or the LCD , replacing either one would cost as much if not more then a Brand new comprable LCD TV.

I wrote to Sharp via their website and they emailed me back that I need to contact their 800 number, Sharp rep. on the phone couldn't tell me anything as to what the problem could be despite the vast number of people posting on the internet about this problem, he provided me with contact numbers for 2 repair guys in my area, yeah right.

On the day before heading out to buy another set , I decided to give it another try on my own , I opened the back of the TV and fideld with what I could in terms of connections hoping that it is a loose connection somewhere as there is not much you could do , the whole thing is an LCD display and 4 electronics boards , an electric supply board in the center , a display / LCD board on the right looking at it from the back of the TV ,the main board on your upper left and a sound board on the lower left.

WHILE TV IS OFF AND THE POWER SUPPLY IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE ELECTRIC OUTLET Your concern is the board on the right , and only the board on the right , you will see a set of about 8 or so of what looks like relays , out of each a 2 wire connector going to the LCD screen and a bundle of 10 or so wiers connected to a connector that power the board on the left side of the board.
WHILE TV IS OFF AND THE POWER IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE ELECTRIC OUTLET and the cover is removed, Remove the metal Grill protecting the board and remove the 8 or so 2 wire connecters going to the LCD display or your right side , DO NOT pull the connecters by the wires , get a firm grip on the plastic connecter body and lock > press on the lock and remove one by one.

Remove the power supply connector to the board in the same manner , not by the wires but by firm grip pull while pressing on lock .

Connect the power at the outlet and turn TV on,You will here the sound of what ever programing is on > REMOVE the power cord from the outlet while TV is ON,.Wait 10 minutes .

REconnect the power at the outlet and turn TV on > again remove the power cord at the outlet while TV is on .

Reconnect 8 or so 2 wire LCD connectors making sure not to damage the wires and making sure to gently press the wires in the connecters.

Reconnect the power supply connecter to the BOARD and Screw the metal grill back on.

REconnect the electric power supply to TV from the electric Wall outlet and turn TV on , Your Disply will reset and stay on, Problem solved.

Now go to on screen MENU > Setup > Reset > Yes and ENTER.
Your TV is now as good as the day you bought it, Done.

I laid the tv down on my coffee table, took off the back panel and loosed the four screws that hold the stand. Vaccumed the dust, put it back together and I haven't had a problem since. tokk me 15 minutes.

I had the same problem (see BB8555 - couldn't log in as that anymore...?). Tech came out, took the back off, took the middle off, got down to the boards. He asked for an eraser, whereupon he "erased" on the contacts, put it all back together, and now it works beautifully. 1/2 of labor, no parts, perfect results. And Sharp covered it under warranty, even though I first notified them of problem last June. Hallelujah!

I have a 60 smart and sprayed windex on the screen to clean it now I have two dark spot on the top and bottom screen on the right side of my t v but every thing else works great does anyone have a clue what I could have done ??? And yes its not all the way black I could somewhat see the picture

Had the same problem, lcd screen going black after few seconds and first solution worked for me too, on a Sharp LC32GA8E TV. Thanks a lot, I was almost throwing away a still very good TV.

My Sharp 32" LCD also had the no picture with sound problem, which would occur sporadically (and intrerestingly, would not occur during the winter but would peak in the summer). Lately, it got worse so that turning the TV on and off would not solve the problem. Read solution 1 and tried to fix it by tightening the 6 screws on the inverter boards. Noticed that the 3 inside screws could be tightened and in fact, the middle inside screw was a bit loose and could take about 1/8 of a turn of tightening. This totally fixed the problem, including a slight vertical band of discoloration to the exteme far right of the picture. I am guessing that the cold winter weather contracted the metal so that all screws maintained contact with the inverter board (TV is on a wall that is common to the garage on the other side which can get real cold in winter and real hot in summer).

My Sharp 32" LCD TD had the similar problem. I've tried the methods posted here. Basically tighten every screws I can reach after remove the back cover. However, it turns out the problem for me is cable connections. After removed cables to DVD, RHS, and stereo, it seems to be OK now with only cable and s-video to my PC. I'm not sure this is the root cause. But it works for now. Finger still crossed.

Take off the back cover, tighten the six screws that hold a metal cover over a circut board on the right side (as you look at the back). Put it back together.

I have found a solution - I think it's to do with connectors- If I unplug my PC I don't have a problem. but with it plugged into the vga port I have the problem. - Right pain

Had the same problem...technician came in and tightend the screws on the back panel which houses backlight. Its working fine now

I got the same problem Picture is gone/ blank screen and sound stays the same. I will try to fix the screws on the back side of the panel and let you all know. BTW My TV model is 40C32U (32'' LCD TV)
