A link to a supermatic manual is here
http://www.arizonaexpressionz.com/elna_instruction_manuals/Supermatic.pdf - I suggest you download this and print it out as this machine is over 50 years old now and manuals are scarce.

Disengage the clutch by holding the outside of the fly wheel and turning the inner knob of the wheel towards you.
You need to take the thread from the spool across to an eyelet on top left, then back to the bobbin winder, up through a hole in the top of the bobbin and hold the thread tail. Flick the bobbin across against the stopper. Now press the presser foot or knee control to start the motor. Hold the thread tail until youve got coverage across the bobbin enough to hold the start, then stop winding and cut the thread tail with scissors. Now continue winding but put the handle of your scissors on top of the thread spool to stop it bouncing and ensure your thread winds smoothly and under tension.

Watch the bobbin fill and give the thread a nudge to fill top and bottom as well as the middle evenly, you want a nice even wind. Fill to 3/4 and stop, flick bobbin back off the stopper, then cut the thread. Remember to re-engage the clutch by reversing the first step.

This is a lovely heirloom Elna machine - you need to thread the bobbin as the manual describes and get the thread into the tension spring. Please read the manual information on oiling too, this machine needs to be oiled on the red spot locations every time you use it according to the manual, use good quality clear sewing machine oil for this purpose.

Where to get a user manual for Elna Supermatic 722010 sewing machine - vintage 1963-1964

Hi Beverly,
My suggestion is that you join up the Yahoo group called "Elna Heirlooms" you'll find lots of very helpful fellow supermatic owners there and probably what you are looking for too. Here is one page from the manual for threading the bobbin into tension, once you've mastered this on the Elnas, its the same for all the Swiss ones.

Yes, top threading is important, you need to get the thread into the tension discs and also the take up lever. Have you cleaned out the tension discs too? these do get gummed up with fibres and dye particles sometimes. Just turn tension down to zero and "floss" between discs with the selvage edge of a clean piece of waste cotton fabric.

Might see you over on Yahoo, several of the members there are really knowledgeable on these great machines.
cheers

How do you put a bobbin in a elna so i can use it to sew

Drop in a full bobbin with the holes side upwards (I'm assuming this is a Swiss Elna sewing Machine horizontal bobbin design as you haven't given the model number).

Now, hold the thread tail with your right hand and pulll the thread clockwise towards you while holding the bobbin still with a finger from your left hand. Bring the thread tail around towards you until it goes into the little slot, then press downwards onto the thread tail close to the bobbin until you hear it click into the tension spring. Test by lifting the thread tail upwards, it should stay in tension and not come back out of the groove.

Now close the back slide cover over the bobbin leaving the bobbin thread tail visible out to the right.

Now manually turn the flywheel towards you while holding the top thread tail and take the needle down into the bobbin holder area and back to the top, pull the thread tail to bring the bobbin thread up to the top.

There is a threading up diagrams at www.sewusa.com http://www.sewusa.com/Threading_Diagrams/Threading_Pages/Elna_Sewing_machine_threading/Elna_Supermatic_threading_diagram.htm
for the old Supermatic but the bobbin holder design is almost identical for all the subsequent models such as the SU, TSP, Supermatic or Air Electronics like the Stella, Carina or Jubilee, the above is the same for all.

Hi, I have an Elna Supermatic model 722010 and the upper tension spring has broken! I am in South Africa and need a solution to fix it. Is there any way I can make this thin wire apparatus? Thanks...

Hi Fiona,
Have you tried Elna in RSA - always worth asking the central head office for a brand first, they may be able to supply the part or direct you to a local Elna dealer who can supply and fit it.

If that isn't an option then you could try this website to source the part www.whitesewingcenter.com? He is the old Swiss Elna specialist in USA and has a wide range of spares in stock. However, you'll need technical knowledge to fit it.

The other option is to join the Yahoo group called "Elna Heirlooms" and then ask the members there for assistance. They are usually pretty helpful to genuine Elna owners of these old Swiss machines.

However, I'd try to find an Elna dealer firstly, I recently purchased the screws for the bobbin case for the same model as you from a service person in NZ, he knew exactly what I wanted and was able to supply them. I found him on Trademe, their Ebay equivalent. The old Sewing Machine Guys are priceless.

On my elna supermatic 722010 sewing machine, the thread makes the bobbin pop out and the thread get tangled underneath. I have had it fixed twice, which is expensive. Should I just get rid of it and buy...

not unless you can find another swiss elna, like star series su. check bobbin in right way, holes on top to wind and load. you havent bought anothet type bobbin??? go to www.arizonaexpressionz.com and download a manual for supermatic. then read bobbin winding and threading carefully and rewinf bobbin and thread up again. make sure thread goes into tension spring all the way. bobbin should turn anticlockwise when yoou pull thread. also please brush clean bobbin holder area and check for any threads caught there. now a drop of quality clear machine oil in middle hole and gently run for 30secs to work in. do this every time you get your machine out. there are several oiling points shown in manual. oil them. these machines are quality but yours may need love tlc from a elna tech especially if it has not been serviced in a while. but a well maintained elna will out stitch a new plastic machine any day in my humble opinion. if you want to join yahoo group elna heirlooms, experts who service their own and share photos info manuals and love these vintage classics.

Which bobbin number do I use for an Elna Supermatic sewing machine made during the period of time 1958-63?

You want the Swiss Elna bobbins, these are metal with holes on one side only and slightly dished. They may be imprinted with "Swiss made" on the core of the bobbin. Elna code number is 426000

Elna Supermatic 722010 is a very vintage elna and would take the metal 7 hole dished bobbin like this.
