There is a Yahoo group for owners of Kenmore machines. They might be able to help you. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vintagekenmoressew/

Also, I just found an instruction manual available for a good price on Amazon also: http://www.amazon.com/Instruction-Manual-Kenmore-Zigzag-Machine/dp/B001PVAR5Q

I have a Bernina 930 record, zigzag stitch it misses some zigzag stitches & does straight stitches

If your Bernina 930 record sewing machine is experiencing issues with zigzag stitches and straight stitches, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
  1. Check the needle: Ensure that the needle is properly inserted and not bent or dull. Replace the needle if necessary, making sure to use the correct needle type and size for the fabric you are sewing.
  2. Adjust the stitch width and length: Verify that the stitch width and length settings are properly adjusted for the desired zigzag stitch. Refer to your machine's user manual for instructions on how to adjust these settings correctly.
  3. Clean and lubricate the machine: A build-up of lint or lack of lubrication can affect the machine's performance. Clean the bobbin area and other accessible parts of the machine using a soft brush or lint brush. Apply a drop of sewing machine oil to the recommended areas as specified in the user manual.
  4. Check the tension: Improper tension can lead to skipped stitches. Ensure that the upper thread tension is properly adjusted for the fabric and thread you are using. Consult the user manual for guidance on adjusting the tension correctly.
  5. Test with different fabrics and threads: Try sewing on different fabrics using different types of thread to determine if the issue is specific to certain materials. This will help identify whether the problem lies with the machine or the materials being used.
  6. Have the machine serviced: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, it may be necessary to have your Bernina 930 record serviced by a professional. There could be underlying mechanical issues that require expert attention.
It's important to note that the Bernina 930 record is a vintage sewing machine, and finding a qualified technician with experience working on older models may be beneficial if further repairs or adjustments are needed.

My Singer 312 won't go back to a straight stitch. Any ideas? TIA

Inspect the Stitch Width Control: The stitch width control determines how wide the zigzag stitch is. If it's set to a wide zigzag, the machine will remain in that mode. Adjust the stitch width control to the narrowest setting (usually zero) for straight stitching.

Clean and Lubricate: Dust, lint, or debris can interfere with the machine's mechanisms. Turn off the machine, unplug it, and clean the bobbin area, feed dogs, and needle plate. Lubricate any moving parts according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Check the Needle Position: Make sure the needle is centered. If it's off-center, the machine may default to zigzag mode. Adjust the needle position if needed.

Test with a New Needle: A bent or dull needle can cause stitching issues. Replace the needle with a new one and ensure it's compatible with your machine.

Reset the Machine: Turn off the machine, unplug it, and wait for a few minutes. Then, plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the internal settings.

Consult the Manual: Refer to your Singer 312 sewing machine's manual for specific troubleshooting steps related to zigzag issues. The manual may provide additional insights or solutions.

Zigzag not working

It might not be working if you have not followed the stitch length and width as per instructions. So, go through the manual and ensure that you have the right settings for sewing a zigzag stitch. Set the proper stitch length and width as directed.

I need the instructional manual for a White 793 model sewing machine

Singer manufactured some White sewing machines. The Singer support site, https://www.singer.com/support , has the White 793 manual listed as the W666-793. The current link to the manual is https://www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/801_white-666-793-x.pdf . Follow the directions for the Creative embroidery to set up an appropriate zigzag stitch. Just ignore the part about patterns (changing the settings every few steps). You will need to use the zigzag presser foot and needle plate. If you are having problems with the stitches skipping, check the needle point for damage (replace with a new needle)and clean the bobbin case.

I hope this helps.

Not stitch zigzag

Have you tried a needle change? It could be blunt or the wrong size. Have you cleaned under the needle plate as the ridges get full of lint there. A toothpick will clean them out.

Changing stitches on a White 1418 sewing machine...

I have a White 1418. Here's how you do it:

1. Attach the buttonhole presser foot (should have come with your machine) and place the fabric underneath.
2. Set the stitch length knob to 0, the zigzag width knob to 5, and set the needle position to center. Sew 3-5 stitches.
3.Change the stitch length to 0.5, the zigzag width to 2, and the needle position to left. Sew to the entire length of your buttonhole.
4.Set stitch length knob to 0, zigzag width knob to 5, and needle position to center and sew about 3-5 stitches
5. Set the stitch length knob to 0.5, zigzag width to 2, and set needle position to the right. Pressing the R button (reverse button), sew up to the top stitches.
6. Remove the fabric and open the button hole with a button hole cutter.

Sounds complicated, but it's really easy. I love this machine, you just have to know how to use it!
