Epson stylus cx8400 will not print black, how do I fix

From the Epson web site:
Q:
Can the printer still print if an ink cartridge is expended or not installed? A: No. The printer will not operate if any cartridge is expended or removed. It's best to always have extra cartridges on hand.
I do this for fun not $$$.

Misfeeds and partial printing with CX8400 on Vista Machine

Make sure you are connected to a USB 2.0 port on your computer. The printer does not do so well on a USB 1.1 port.

If you have a desktop, you can add a USB 2.0 adapter card. If you have a notebook you can use a USB 2.0 converter card (PCMCIA or PC Card or CardBus(32bit) or whatever).
