You need to restore your Ipod .... This will erase all content on the ipod. The ipod can only be synced to one itunes account. This is a pretty easy fix for you. Your ipod is a nano so the max space you can have is 16gb. Just connect your ipod to your itunes account erase and sync it with your library you will need to add any additional songs from your husbands library to your library if you want them on your player ... or if your spouse has all the music that you want on your ipod just sync the nano to his library hope this helps
worst case scenario is that a circuit has broken inside. But your ipod will be under warrenty for a year from purchase.
Otherwise, leave the ipod to charge for a long time. Just leave it connected directly to the computer USB port despite not having any change in appearance. Also, don't connect it via a usb hub or through your keyboard. You will need to plug it into your computer directly.
You can also try entering DFU mode. Here is a great step by step guide to do that. http://iphonefreakz.com/beginners-guide/howto-dfu-mode/
Then restore the ipod and update the firmware. Make sure you have the latest version of itunes installed. By checking through software update.
You need iTunes software - freely available from the apple.com website (for Windows and Apple operating systems). All the selecting and loading of music, podcasts and videos to your iPod is controlled using iTunes. Once you have that software open it is a fairly intuitive process as your iPod will appear within iTunes as a specific device and you will see all the options for controlling it.
