My Compaq Presario 700 CM2130 failed to boot one day out of the blue. It just gave me an error message saying Operating System Not Found. I put in the disk for Windows XP and after a few minutes of loading files, I now get an error message saying there was no hard disk drives found; make sure the drives are properly installed. I researched this error message and found a suggestion pointing to RAID/SATA configuation in BIOS. Now, when I look into BIOS, it seems I only have about 60 seconds and the computer powers down. I don't know enough about what I am doing or if this is even where the problem is, so I thought I would ask around. Any ideas?

To be honest, I never really got that far. I know it had anti virus software on it, but I don't think it was up to date. I bought the laptop used off Craig's list a few months ago. It didn't have Word on it, so I couldn't use it for the main reason I bought it, completing assignments for school (they only accept Word). I only booted it up maybe 6 times since I bought it. I went online with it, but nothing much. I brought it with me on vacation to use in the hotel and that was when I saw the first "No Operating System Found" message. I put it away and just recently started playing with it to see what needed to be done. I am hoping it won't be too bad and it will still be worth it to fix this laptop.

Have you been running anti virus software? If so, which one?

When you get to the BIOS window, do you get a message saying that is going to shut down in some period of time of does it just shut down?

Here is my best guess and solution. I believe you've got a worm virus. If you have nothing that you want on this hard drive, and you've got a full install Windows XP disk, I'd do a full install with a complete format, not a quick format, FAT32, if you can, NTFS, if you can't and reinstall Windows XP.

Hi!! I have a Compaq Presario that a friend gave me a while back that used to work and start up..but it doesn't now and I haven't been on it in months. It keeps saying that: Windows could not

The "Win32 config" system folder and the files within it are crucial to the Windows Operating System's stability. If any of these files become damaged or corrupted, you likely receive error messages. Fortunately, Microsoft puts the files to repair these problems on the installation CD that comes with your operating system. The original install disk offers a quick way to repair the system. Damaged files are replaced in only a few minutes.

Insert your Windows CD into the computer drive. Restart your computer. On startup, look for the message, "Press any key to boot from CD" and press "Enter" on your keyboard. You should see the blue "Welcome to Setup" screen. Click "Enter" on the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Read the "Microsoft Software License Terms," then press "F8." Use your arrow keys, go down and select the Windows installation you want to repair. Press "R" for "Repair." Windows will now start to restore the Win32 System to your computer.

Operating system not found

This message means that the hard disk was not detected, this is due to either the BIOS setting was changed or the hard disk has failed.
Try booting up with a DOS disk and run FDISK, and see if it detects the hard drive, if possible run a diag test program.

Operating system not found

Is the hard drive being recognised. IF it is then if you format and reinstall the operating system that will fix the problem. Sometimes it's possible to repair the OP instead of doing a full format and reinstall but I rarely find that successful.

Good luck

Compaq presario 700

your operating system wasn't found because kill disk wipes your hard drive clean.
You have to re-install your operating system, all the drivers, and any programs that you might want in your computer.
Boot into the BIOS (tapping the delete key during initial boot-up should get you there, or follow any instructions on the bottom of your POST screen to get into "set-up") and make sure your DVD/CD drive is the first boot option, then put your operating system disc in the drive, and re-boot...the drive should read your CD, and boot from there.
