wd-52525 This is a DLP, I dont suggest taking it apart to clean anything, this is what we call a MICRO display, the imaging device is about 1" square and blown up 50X to the size of the pix you watch, anytime anyone I know has taken stuff appart where the mirror is at has ended up worse off, you say that there is dust on the mirror, what does it look like in your picture? If the spots are quarter size or so and fuzzy edges the dust is inside the lightengine and you want a factory cleanroom to service the LE, the one thing I think you can safely do is pull the lamp and check for dust on it as it can cause issues in pix, other than that I dunno what to tell you, hope this info helps.

This model is equipped with a self-diagnosis feature to help with diagnosis of shutdown problems. To activate this turn the unit on let it shutdown then press the input and menu buttons on the front panel simultaneously and hold them in for 5 seconds after 5 seconds the power LED on the front panel will blink a two digit sequence. And yes, you are right. It is the light engine causing it. And unfortunatley you need to have your light engine replaced also. I've replaced several of them for that same reason. So I know what I'm talking about.
