I don't know about Windows 7, but I'm using my Astra 4600 on Windows Vista.
Umax said on its website that the Astra series of scanners are not supported for Windows Vista/7. I suppose this is to get us to buy new scanners...
I searched all around the internet for my driver, but couldn't get one. Finally I tried one more time using the CD that came with my scanner. Of course it doesn't work if you run Setup.exe from the CD --- it will just tell you that the OS is not supported. So I went to Device Manager and deleted the scanner under the "unknown USB device" section, and unplugged the scanner.
When I replugged the scanner, I let Vista install the driver automatically. Of course it couldn't, as Microsoft doesn't support it either. Then the install wizard asked me to put in the CD that came with the scanner. And that did the job! Vista was able to ignore the fact that the driver wasn't written specifically for Vista, and the scanner is working!
*be sure all your "Windows Updates" are up to date.
Once installed I had to go to the default directory C:\VistaScan to find the .exe file. The software booted right up! But, it said the device was not on. I simply pulled the USB out and put it back in and it worked perfectly.
I imagine you might have to start up vista scan and pull the USB cord in and out every time you reboot your machine, which is kinda a cheap work around. However, it is a way to "give it to the man"!! and I like that idea ;)
go to UMAX 4100 scanner installation CD that comes with the scanner and find the setup.exe file and on it clik left mouse and then right mouse and choose properties and then choose "Install in WinXP-Sp2 compaitibility mode" ...Thats its . Then it will install in Visa and will work perfectly. Only when you startup the Vista it gives you some error message "incompitable Os" etc ..just cancells the message ..and your Umax 4100 Scanner will work perfectly.
