I about to buy a stacked washer/dryer unit. Can it be laid down in a pickup bed to move, or does it have to stay standing up?

You should bne OK to lay it down on its side - either one. Just make sure you line the pickup with some blankets etc so that you dont ruin the paint on the journey.

I have a Kenmore washer model no.4174102000 that has broken and was advised it cannot be fixed. I have a Kenmore stackable dryer model no.41781042000 and am being told by Sears that I have to buy a new...

a stack unit is a very risky investment, altho it's understandable if you have limited space. if the hold downs on the washer are rusted out or broken thru you need to have someone weld them for you. That's how we used to do it where I worked but stacks are not usually easily worked on. I'm afraid you will probably have to get an entirely new unit or maybe a used one from a reputable used appl. dealer in your area. Check around, you might get lucky and find one relatively inexpensive

Take one of the screws down to your local hardware and buy new ones and lock washers (with teeth on the inside so clothes won't catch on them).

Stacked Maytag Neptune - Accessing Inertial imb/Upper tub disp Switches

The switches you are referring to are set-reset. These rarely have a fault. Normally the machine control board is the faulty component. How did you determine that these switches are faulty ?

The safest way to access the upper portion of the washer is to remove the dryer. Another method is to remove the "complete" washer front and the control panel. This will give you access to the top of the washer tub.

Oil leak

A small amount is not serious. There is no good way of adding oil to the transmission unless you want to take the top off the transmission.
