The charge time for the zune is about three hours, as for the seeing if its charging in the lower right hand part of the screen the battery icon will have a lighting bolt in the battery to show its charging, and when fully charged it will turn green

In windows XP, you must have sp2, is says it in the system requirements.  I have a zune too and if it is completely dead, it will only display the battery on the screen until it has enough juice to turn the screen on.  Don't worry, if the battery is on the screen, that means that it is recieving power and is charging.  As for XP, try to update the system, the sp2 or even sp3 update should be in there!!!

You need to have the Zune software installed in order for it to be recognized by Windows. Go to zune.net then download and install. The latest version is 3.1 but the download site will still call it 3.0. The download is about 131 megs!

Your Zune will NOT show up in explorer as a drive. There are hacks that enable this but from what i read it is not worth the effort.

Enjoy! The Zune rocks and the software is much better than itunes.

I had a 30g w/same problem. I installed the Zune software from CD. Plugged the Zune into my USB jack and waited hrs for the full screen battery icon to go away. It never did. Here is what I did to fix it. I left the Zune disconnected until its battery drained and the lcd went dark. In this state, pressing the play/pause button, caused the full screen battery icon to appear briefly before the lcd went dark again. With the Zune disconnected from my xp pc, I ran Windows Update in express mode. I have Windows system restore and auto-update turned off and rarely update my pc, so I also took the opportunity to take a manual system check-point (so I could restore from the check-point if an update trashed my pc). I took and installed all the latest Windows updates. When it was done, I had all the latest security updates and IE 7. At this point I went to http://www.zune.net/en-us/products/zunesoftware/download.htm and downloaded the latest Zune software. I installed the Zune software update. I ran the new Zune software on my PC and found the device tab. NOW I connected the Zune to a USB port on the back of my PC. The full screen battery icon appeared on the Zune but nothing appeared in the Zune software. I left it this way for a few minutes. It occurred to me that I might get more power through the USB port if I turned off my other external USB devices, which I did. Within a few minutes, the Zune FINALLY came to life and a Zune splash screen appeared on the device. The device booted and was FINALLY recognized by the Zune software on my PC. Shortly after that I noticed that it already started synchronizing with my PC music collection. I figured it would charge up and download my entire collection (20gig) so I grabbed some sleep for a few hours. When I returned, the PC was asleep too. Unfortunately, the Zune was not charged and had stopped sync'ing. Not to be discouraged, I woke up the PC, exited the Zune software and left the device charging for an hour or so. When I returned, the device was about 80% charged. I quickly disconnected and played my first music video on the device!!!! I reconnected (the Zune software auto-launched) and left it sync'ing and charging for a while longer. When it was 100% charged, I disconnected and have been using it for a few hours. It was a long painfull road to get this thing setup, but it was WELL WORTH IT! I am already a huge fan of this device. In fact, I'm considering passing this one on to my wife so I can get the 80gig. Hang in there, it's worth it!!!!

PS: one sidebar -- I have noticed that the pc software will only sync about 800 songs in a session. I have simply been restarting the sync to get the next session going. At this point, I am fully synchronized and have 4.5 gig free.

It sounds like the device could use a full reset.

You may also want to check some of the other battery options for the zune

First, you must not use the front usb ports on your cpu. You must plug your zune device in the back usb port. You must then download the LATEST Zune software. Install it and restart your computer. If done correctly, your Zune device will begin to charge and start working correctly. Have fun with your device

Hi,

I am not sure if this is gonna work but, since you've tried all other steps why dont we give this a try too...LOL :-)

To troubleshoot this issue, try one or more of the following methods in the order in which they are listed:
  1. Let your Zune device charge for 30 minutes, then disconnect and reconnect the cable to turn on the player. It can take up to 3 hours to fully charge.
  2. Connect the Zune device to a different USB port on the computer. Use a USB port on the back of the computer. Do not use a USB hub.
  3. Use another supported high power source, such as an Xbox 360 console, a Zune AC Adapter, a Zune Car Charger, or a Zune FM Transmitter/Charger.

Note These devices are sold separately.
  4. If you are connecting your Zune device to a mobile computer, make sure that the mobile computer is plugged in and is not running on battery power. Many mobile computers are configured to conserve power when they are running on battery power to extend battery life. This behavior may affect Zune device charging.
  5. If the Zune device is charging slowly, be aware that, for optimal charging, the Zune device requires at least 500 milliamps (mA) of power. Frequently, USB ports that are located on the front of a computer and on some USB hubs are low-power, 100-mA ports. Typically, the high-power, 500-mA USB ports are on the back of the computer. Additionally, when you suspend the computer or put the computer to sleep, high-power USB ports may be switched to low-power, 100 mA mode.
  6. If the device boots to the home screen but is still not charging correctly, continue with the "Home screen is displayed" steps in the following section.

If the device continues to display the full-screen charging icon, continue with "Full-screen charging icon is displayed."
  7. If the battery in the device still does not charge correctly, visit the following Web site to sign in and register your device: http://service.zune.net (http://service.zune.net)

At this Web site, you can submit a request for service if your device qualifies for service.

120 GB Zune wont turn on or charge like its complely dead.

Ok the solution is so simple your goign to kick your self. what you do is take you zune cable plug it into any thign other than your computer say a Nintendo Wii or PlayStation 2 or 3 leave it for a few minutes then unplug it and try to restart it if it dosent restart while its pluged in. if it dosent restart then plug it back in and let it set over night some times the battery is so dead that the computer cant pick it up but make sure your wii or Xbox or what ever is turned on .
