The volume control needs a good flush out, take the unit apart to expose volume control pod, buy some electronic contact cleaner and flush the pod while turning the volume back and forth, repeat 2 or 3 times. Note some pods have small slot where you can spray.
check if the volume control needs to be replaced. volume controls gets bad in due time coz of the carbon layer which gets thinner and thinner till it gets cut off
yeah the volume is limited to the pod... iv also thought about that it doesnt play very loud does it... im sure the only way it would be louder is if you got an ipod home with larger speakers...
I had the same problem right out of the gate, the volume dial on my control pod for my Companion 5 wasn't working, however, the touch pad and LED worked. I called Bose customer service and was instructed to:
First, unplug the power directly at the back of the woofer while the unit was on;
Next, I was instructed to unplug the control pod, visually inspect for any damage/defect;
Finally, re-seat the control pod on the back of the woofer and then lastly plug the power cable back into the woofer.
The pod that controls the volume knob is either very dirty or needs replaced! (If you remove knob you will see the shaft of the volume pod go into the pod itself) You may try cleaning with a can of high pressure air by spraying short bursts of air in and around the pod area! If that doesent work you will have to replace the volume pod!...Please rate my response! Thank You!
It sounds like the volume control pod has gone bad and needs replaced (The knob shaft connects to the pod main body and the inside of the volume pod is what controls the rate of volume,If the inside becomes worn ,broken or dirty the volume will become erratic) Replace volume pod ! ..You may try cleaning by taking off the volume knob and getting a can of pressure air and blowing the dust out!

I had an extra one but I sold it. According to creative labs they do not sell any replacement parts for the speaker systems. The best suggestion that I can give is to check craigslist and ebay for the control pods.
