My XT will not connect to Vista.

I have had a Rebel XT for about a year now and all the software to download my pictures was on my old laptop, with Windows XP. I recently bought a laptop with windows Vista, and I installed all the software for my camera from the CD's (EOS Utility, Camera Window, Zoombrowser, etc) but when I attach my camera to my computer and open the EOS utility, I cannot upload any pictures to my computer, it doesn't recognize that my camera is even plugged in.

Vista does not recognize the camera, the Canon software being correctly installed. It always alerts that the camera isn't connected to the notebook (compaq presario 500 With Vista Home Basic).
Thanks for any hint.

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa.

I am not sure about this matter but it seems there is a problem with your new computer. it might not recognize the usb cable.
try to plug your camera in another USB port and try again.

SOURCE: EOS Utility does not recoganize Canon Rebel Xti

I believe there are 2 modes of usb transfer that you can pick in the camera. They are set somewhere in the menu in the options. If you go through the menus thoroughly you'll find it. One option is for connecting the camera directly to a printer and the other is for computer transfer (there might also be an Auto setting but I don't remember for sure). Make sure that setting is set for computer transfer. If that doesn't fix your problem, re-install or update EOS Utility / ZoomBrowser.

SOURCE: My XT will not connect to Vista.

I had same problem. I tried the Canon customer support and got similar advice Muhammed gave, along with several additional steps to try. None of them worked. The only thing that worked was the above suggestion of setting the camera itself to the PTP for the communication setting of the menu.

It's too bad you have do do this work around, it does not allow for the same level of control as the pc communication setting.

In most cases, you should be able to get it by going to the Canon website for your country. Go to Canon.com, select your region and then go to downloads. For the US, use
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=DownloadIndexAct

Select your camera, and operating system and you will find all the utilities there.

Bet you have Vista on your new computer. If so, it's a Windows Vista issue. Go to Canon's website and get and install the updated drivers for your camera. Here's the link (select Drivers and Download, then select Windows Vista, then look for, download, and install the driver for Windows Vista.

Download pictures from my Rebel EOS to my computer

Take a look at Picasa, from Google. Also take a look at Irfanview. I haven't used Irfanview in over a year (since I moved from a PC to a Mac - it's the one piece of software I really miss on my Mac), but before I moved to the Mac it was my primary photo organizer and viewer. It's a very impressive program for free software from an individual programmer (Irfan).

You need to install the correct software on your computer. They are usually called drivers. Here is a link to the Canon Rebel Xt page from Canon with all sorts of goodies you can download. The most important section to get things going for you is the drivers. Select your OS from the drop down list, download and install. If you don't have drivers your PC or Mac doesnt recognize the fine piece of hardware... your camera. Hit me up if you're still stuck.

Downloading pictures

Yes, you need a driver so that your operating system understands how to interface to your camera. Canon Europe has a handy web page:

http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010192.asp

Enter your operating system and language, and you will get the choices of things that can be downloaded relevant to your camera. If you were using Windows Vista, for example, your choice would be "Canon Camera USB WIA Driver for Windows Vista". Install that, reboot, and then connect your camera again. It should be recognized by your computer.
