More than likely it is a heat issue. Does the problem occurred when the laptop is on a hard surface? If the problem disappears when on a hard surface (desktop), then it is a heat/ventilation issue. You might invest $20 - 30$ for a laptop cooler.

If you can start it up on safe mode go and back up the files that you needed because formatting the HD will be needed and reinstalling the operating system. You can also download malwarebytes first and run it during safe mode. once it is finish restart it in normal mode if it does not work perform the 1st step above.
The adapter might be faulty
Check the adapter with multi-meter, the voltage reading should be slightly higher than the voltage output that is printed on the label on the adapter.
if its totaly blank , the first thing you should try is connecting it too an external moniter, that will rule out motherboard or graphics card problem if you get a display to an external moniter
