Likely a hard drive failure. With system off, hold the Fn Key and press the power button, this should launch diagnostics If the diags fail on the hard drive then you have a confirmed failure. If the diags don't run, then try booting to the resource CD to run them.

The screen cable is most likely damaged. Try connecting an external monitor. If it works, you need to take the computer to a repair center to have the cable changed.

Dell Inspiron 6000: No Boot Up after BIOS loads

You can download a small program called memtest 86 which is an ISO for creating a bootable cd that will test the ram. You can get it from: http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

Also the HD may be the problem even if the BIOS can see it. Pull the HD and try booting from the xp disk again.

Hope this helps

Inspiron 4000 problems

First, can it boot into BIOS setup? This is DEL, Esc, F1, F2, or whatever key your user manual instructs; press the requisite key immediately after pressing the power switch. Second, can it boot from an emergency recovery disk from the floppy, or a boot CD from the CD drive?
