Won't turn on after first time

I used my Garmin c550 right out of the box without charging the battery. I plugged it into my car with the AC adapter and it was working fine. When I turned the car off, it shut itself down after 30 seconds. After that, it would not turn on. I've had it plugged into the computer for over 10 hours to charge the battery, but it still is not turning on. (The device did not automatically power on when connected to the computer.) I've tried pressing the power button, holding it down for over a minute, pressing the reset button, simultaneously pressing reset and power, and nothing has worked. Garmin.com's support page won't load and it's past customer service times (will call tomorrow). But just in case customer service can't help, I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else, if I'm doing something wrong, and if there is a way to fix this.

I have the same problem. Have been using the unti for 2 mos., and has been working fine until 2 days ago. It won't turn back on. I tried plugging it into the computer, and trying the reset button, however it still wont turn on. What next?

The suggested solution seems like it's for if the device won't turn off, however, my device won't turn on, so I can't update the software. But, I'll try keeping it unplugged for a few days to see if that helps and add another comment if it does. Thanks.

same problem. My streetpilot freezes up if I don't turn it off when I park. So I turn it off, then it won't turn back on. I've tried pressing the reset button. The last time this happened, it finally reset after a few hours. I am beyond frustrated, and am considering sending it back and going with a different brand.

After waiting about 24 hours without plugging the device in, I was able to get it to turn on when connecting it to the computer! I've updated the software but haven't tested it much after that. It seems to me that the unit may not have been off after all. It could be the device encountered the known freezing problem after turning off the screen, but not completely shutting down? Whatever it was, I hope the software update fixes it. Thanks!

Saw this on a different forum.....I got one for xmass.....hope it doesn't happen to me!!!!!!!!

I apologize for the inconvenience. After further research with our engineers, a problem has been discovered on your C550. A file has been created to stop the unit from turning off and locking up. Please download the new file from your computer to the unit. The file is attached to this email along with instructions on how to get the file into the unit.

The following procedure will update the software in your C550 series and correct the power issue you are experiencing with your Garmin C550 series

1.) Let the Garmin sit without power for at least 24-48 hours.

2.) Plug the C5xx series into the your computer (using a USB port in the back of the computer) with the cable provided with the unit.

3.) After removing the faceplate on the front of the Garmin press and release the reset button. At this time the C550 series will reset and power on.

4.) Save the attached file included in e-mail from Garmin Product Support. Save this file to the desk top on your computer. Note: This will make it easy to find.

5.) Open the My Computer window (by accessing the start menu on the bottom left of your computer screen).

6.) Locate and open the Garmin Mass Storage device.

7.) Locate the Garmin folder and open.

8.) Open the remoteSW folder.

9.) Copy the file that you have saved to the desktop and paste it into the remoteSW folder you have just opened. Make sure that none of the files contained within the remoteSW folder is highlighted, or you will not be able to save the new file.

10.) A message window will pop up asking you to confirm that you want to replace the file; Select Yes.

11.) Disconnect the C550 series from the USB cable and let the unit restart. A message will appear on the screen stating "Updating PLD Software".

Note: the screen will fade out and go blank during this process. Do not be alarmed, this is part of the update procedure, and the screen will return to normal within seconds.

Laptop won't startup on power or battery

Step 1:
Take the battery out, plug in the charger and see if the laptop works. If it works, the battery may be the problem. Check the AC Adapter
Check to make sure the adapter is plugged securely into the wall outlet, connected firmly to the adapter box and to the back of your laptop. Most AC adapters have a little light in them on that rectangular box in the middle of the cord that lights up when it's getting electricity. If that light isn't on, try a different outlet. Check your fuse or circuit breaker box and plug a different device into that outlet to make sure there is power to it. If it still does not light up, your adapter could need replacing. Also check the adapter box for signs of warmth, as it will generate heat when it's plugged in. No heat means no power.

Remove the Battery Sometimes it's as simple as a seated battery. Remove the battery entirely and clean out any dust, lint or hair that may be clogging the connectors and preventing a proper connection. Reseat the battery securely and make sure the little locking pins that hold your battery in place are securely fastened and there is no movement. Unplug your laptop while it is running. If it still works, the battery has been charging. If it shuts off, or doesn't hold a charge very long, you have a bad battery. Unplug your laptop while it is off, then try to turn it on. If the battery is bad, your laptop probably won't turn on at all. Turn off your laptop's screen-saver when testing its battery. The screen-saver will conserve the battery and not give a clear time frame for how long your battery can really last. Click the battery icon on your laptop when it is unplugged. It can tell you how much battery life you have available. This icon is usually located in the bottom right corner of your screen and will provide the percentage of battery power you have left. Keep track of the time it takes to go from 100% charged to 1% charged. If this takes less than an hour, your battery is probably beginning to fail. You can also try this every week or two to see if your battery holds a charge for shorter periods. Factor in the amount of time you have used your laptop. Most laptop batteries last 2 to 3 years or about 500 charges. Wait a few days before determining whether a new laptop battery is faulty. New batteries sometimes take a few charges to build up to their maximum run time.

I will be travelling in Europe without a car and no access to a computer. Is there a plug in adaptor for charging the battery? Can the battery be replaced, as needed?

Hello,

You can purchase AC international adapters for all nuvi units, here is a link to one http://www.gpscity.ca/garmin-nuvi-zumo-international-ac-adapter.html.. For your battery it will not be able to be replaced by you the user, I only recommend replacing it through an authorized Garmin repair center.

Hope this helps!

My garmin c550 battery is dead and it still work while plugged in car power adapter - I need to reset it as its showing "memory full . All the instructions says that i need to switch off power and...

Try unlplugging GPS.
Hold power and bottom right corner.
Then plugging back in whilst holding buttons/screen.
Though you will probably have to get some new batteries for it soon.

The filter is probably blocked.

It is inside the base of the machine.

Take out the filter and clean it and also clean out the filter well as that can also hold quite a bit of debris.

Will not turn on

It is possible that the internal battery has discharged, and is unable to recharge due to a blown fuse inside the cigar lighter plug or a blown fuse in the car's fuse block for the cigar lighter outlet.

  1. Unscrew and remove the silver or black, round end piece.
  2. fileservlet?date=1&kb=%7b6b85cfa0-194d-11dc-44cd-000000000000%7d&id=%7b6e53bea0-6874-11dd-436f-000000000000%7d&ext=jpg
  3. Remove the fuse (glass and sliver cylinder) and replace with a new fuse.
  4. Ensure that the silver tip is placed in the end piece. Screw on the end piece.
fileservlet?date=1&kb=%7b6b85cfa0-194d-11dc-44cd-000000000000%7d&id=%7b6e476290-6874-11dd-436f-000000000000%7d&ext=jpg

Consult your car's owner's manual for locating the fuse block in the car. Both fuses must be good.

If you're unable to power up the c500 outside of the car (running on internal battery) your c550's internal battery may no longer be able to accept a charge. This will require a battery replacement - or use with a cigar adapter only. You may have to return the GPS to Garmin for a battery replacement - but there are some third party battery providers for some Garmin GPS units. If one is available for the c550, you may save enough money to make going the third party route worthwhile.

Please rate this replay if helpful - good luck!

You can download / view a copy of your c550 manual here.

Help!

Turn on your garmin out of the car, connect to a PC via USB cable and see if the battery indicator goes away. If it does then the USB to PC cable is working and charging the unit. To test the car adapter, you can unscrew the tip of the plug to examine the fuse. Most Garmin car charger units have a light on them that ilimunates when you plug it in and turn the ignition. It could be that the plug is just loose in the socket. The picture shows the unit running on battery. If you plug in the usb cable and this indicator goes away, then it should be charging.

My GPS won't turn on.

I had this issue also. When I got it out of the box, it had maybe 30 minutes of playtime without a charge before the battery went low. I used the USB it came with and found plugging it into my laptop AND desktop does absolutely nothing; even though the magellangps.com states the USB can be used as a charger on the PC.

It's been less than 8 hours since I've had it, and I have not gotten a chance to use the car adapter to charge it... I have a DC/AC unit inside my house which I am using to charge the unit and it works fine (incase you dont know what a DC/AC adapter is; its pretty much a lighter adapter that plugs into the wall).

MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT -
With my migraine starter experience with charging and powering on; I have read on 100's of Magellan 3250 reviews that cold tempratures cause these issues.

Other possible causes:
Battery is 100% dead = leave it in your car charging (HIDE UNDER THE SEAT!)

If the USB port plugged in charging in the car; if it is still not working, make sure that the FM part is also plugged in. I found that my GPS does not charge with just the USB end plugged... At least for me, it will only charge with BOTH ports plugged....

I hoped my novel helped... If it didn't; return your Magellan, and buy a GARMIN GPS. I have a Garmin that I bought for my hubby, and 2 years later, has never once experienced any issues.

Charging unit with AC adapter

I have a 100v A/C power / charger unit for my garmin C340 GPS that I use to charge my Garmin's battery every day. I can use thj adapter to run the GPS, or just turn it off and let it charge the GPS. But it connects dirctly to the Garmin GPS unit, not to the cradle like the Cigarrette lighter unit does. .
