This might be a lens fault and a repair is recommended.

If it also switch off when not retracting then it could also be a no power issue.

You could try following:
Make sure that you are installing a fresh/ full charge battery
Remove the memory card and the battery
Clean the metal contacts on the battery using a clean cloth
Use the camera w/o the memory card

Pls test with an alt. batt.
If you do not have access to a dif. battery.
Pls. take the batt out of the camera. Insert the charger into the unit from the main socket and turn the camera on. If the camera works you will need to replace the batt. If not you will need to order a No power repair.

Lens on my S7000 doesn't retract when switched off - now permanently extended - and camera dead

This is going to require service / repair at the shop, not something you will be able to correct.

Lens doesn't work

Try removing the battery and memory card for at least 15 minutes. With some cameras, this will reset the camera and lens may clear the error message, as long as there is something that is not physically damaged the camera.

I have a Nikon AF-S 55-200mm 1:4-56ED. Focuses fine, lens goes in and out fine...except...it doesn't retract completely flush with the barrel of the lens. Is this a big problem?

I do not have that particular lens in my collection, but not all lenses do completely retract to a flush position. If your lens performs well at all focal lengths and takes sharp pictures, it is probably ok.

Lense doesn't retract

Common faults for this:

The lens motor is defective, lens gears jammed. Fix is lens unit replacement.

The lens servo drive circuit is not functioning. Fix is to replace the circuit board that contains the lens servo control circuits.

The connector assembly between the lens is not making proper contact, or the lens wire assembly is defective. Fix is replacement of the cable and connectors if applicable in the particular model. If the connectors on the circuit board or lens are defective, then the appropriate unit must be replaced.

No power is going to the lens unit, and or the lens servo circuit. Fix is replacement of the drive circuit board, or the power inverter if it uses a separate feed for the lens only.

Generally, with these low cost cameras they generally do not pay to service out of warranty. The service cost can approach the cost of replacing the camera.

Common causes of failures in these cameras is from water (getting wet), or dropping, or rough usage.

Shutter lense is stuck out, want retract. Display went black. want retract and display is black.

Hi, It sounds like the lens is stuck, possibly from dropping? Either way if lighting tapping it doesn't work then unfortunately there's no way it can be fixed.

Lens will not retract, camera was not dropped,

Leave the batteries out for a while and then try turning camera on..hopefully its resets the camera and retracts lens.
