I opened the door on my sharp microwave and now it wont latch. it sounded like something snapped off where the door latches to the microwave, not the door itself . Even if the door is held shut the light stays on and it wont work

It may be the latch head spring or the door open lever or button.

DOOR SPRING LATCH HEAD HOOK

If you gently push up on the door latch heads (hook-like devices sticking out of the door) there should be spring tension. If they just flop right up, the spring is off inside.

Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner door panel.

If it's the door panel, it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware to fashion a new spring mount.

The door latch head (hook) is easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.

you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see how it goes together.

i opened the door on my sharp microwave and now it - 4c9c250.jpg

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) here that demonstrates how it's done.

DOOR OPENING BUTTON LEVER

What usually breaks is the door open lever, but it may also be that the rear side of the door open button has worn down too far to work.

On a counter top model, the outer cover will need to be removed to diagnose and repair this. On an over-the-range model, only the control panel needs to be removed.

Please unplug the oven first.

Once it is apart, you'll be able to see how the door open button would press against the door open lever, which would then lift up against the door latch heads (hook-like projections on the door) and the door should open.

You can usually find exploded views and part numbers for Sharp models by entering your model number at the Sears parts site.

If not, let me know. We have many Sharp manuals and if we have yours, we can link you to it at no charge.

The best place to order Sharp parts is
Encompass (formerly Tritronics).

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number from the tag on the unit) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

How to unlock sharp stove?

Not super familiar with Sharp Microwave ovens Convection or not,
but most microwave ovens can run into at least two reasons that they won't open and both require you to remove the cover over the whole oven - If the door has a push-button to release the door, you could find inside it has popped free of it's pivots and is not lifting up the latches on the door so you can open it, or is has actually snapped that latch. The other thing I have seen more on Panasonic microwave ovens and again moreso on the newer Inverter ovens, is that the latching assembly inside is attached to too thin a piece of metal and the metal actually bends - now your door and it's latching assembly and switches don't line up properly.
In that case you will still need to remove the cover and do your best to realign the switch assembly with the front of the microwave so that the door can click in and out easily.

Door latch and Screen

This is because of the broken latch. There are switches inside the oven that are operated by the door latches to make sure you're not trying to use the oven with the door open. With the new door, your oven should be back to normal.

Door won't latch/microwave won't turn on

The door does come apart. Open the door and where the hinges are, there are openings where the hinges enter the door, this plastic piece (goes all the way around the door) With a small flat blade screws driver VERY carefully pry it (plastic) off, once off, check the latch end for the spring, typical failure for a Sharp is the little tab that the spring hooks to on the door, the only way to repair this so it will last is to replace the door frame. they are not too expensive, about $50 or so Part# FCOVB166KIT
is the door frame assy

Directions to remove and open door panel to repair safety door latch.

You don't have to remove door to remove panel. Panel is held in by an outer plastic retainer which can be removed by carefully prying with a small screwdriver. I can be replaced by pushing it back in place after repair is completed. If you cannot open door from the outside, remove cover and you can see latches. Pry up on latch which will let door open.
