Picture and sound on my sony 3LCD tv keep cutting out. The problem is becoming more frequent. The tv will turn on okay, but after a few minutes the picture will go, then sound for a few seconds. Picture will come back, then sound. Not sure of the model...it came with the house, so no owner's manual. Says it has a Wega engine. Is it worth fixing? It is so big, I don't know how to move it as it is in a cut out above the fireplace.

My Sony Wega KDF-55XS955 55" was going on for 1-2 minutes then going black with no sound and after a few minutes would come back on. After reading all the posts and talking with a repair guy I replaced the bulb and that fixed the problem.
Yes, if this TV has a bulb it is likely to be the bulb.
I am not familiar with this exact model, but other LCD Projection TV will show dim picture after some time. Expected life of the lamps is about 2yrs. After 2yrs the picture will become dim. After 5yrs I am suprised it is even working.
Dirt doesn't cause this problem unless your are a smoker or have the unit "literally" outside. DO NOT try to clean it or let someone tell you to do it because it will cause more problems than it fixes.
Either the picture tubes are going, or they are dusty. Take apart the front grill and take off the black cut away behind the grill. Inspect the tubes and the circuit boards. If they are dusty blow them off with an air can duster. It might work and its free and takes 5 minutes.
It can be just an adjustment of your screen control. There is a "sweet spot" on the control where it allows the picture to come through. This is a common problem with sets that are getting old. If there is a problem with the high voltage from the color tubes then it will shut down the video until the problem is gone and it is safe again to show the picture. This is known as going into a shutdown procedure to protect the set. A technician will be needed to fix your problem since it will require proper troubleshooting and knowledge of high voltage system and safety procedures.
If your set was manufactured around July 2005, you may need a firmware upgrade to solve this issue. On the Sony website you can enter your model # and serial # to see if you TV is affected. If so, it is easy to have done and may be free from Sony. It sounds like the issue they described in the writeup on the required formware update. I had mine done within few months of when i bought it (purchased in Dec 2005) and it has been working flawlessly since.
Good day.
I believe there may have been some parts that were burned out due to high voltage. There are cases where insects such as lizards penetrated and got stuck then got stuck then got electrecuted inside. You can open the back cover of your unit or better, refer to the repairman.
