Fisher Price Digital Arts and Crafts Studio Won't Start

I've successfully installed the software. When I hit the on/off button (orange button on top), nothing happens. I've tried several different USB ports on my computer to no avail. The troubleshooting guide states that for "Program does not run" you should go to www.fisher-price.com/dacs/register for a free update. I went to the URL, but got a "come back soon" message. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Same problem. The screen just freezes and I either have to "CTRL-ALT-DLT" or complete turn the power of my laptop off. Very frustrating on Christams Day.

  • Anonymous Dec 26, 2007

The console won't even start. I also tried another computer but still didn't work. I have more than enough RAM and processor, I even adjusted the screen resolution to no avail. I then uninstalled and re-installed the programme. I ran the test page and everything seemed OK and working until I tried to start the console. Still no joy. My little boy is very dissappointed.

Same problem............... Sounds like Fisher-Price didn't test this product thoroughly. I don't even have VISTA and am having the same problem. Only reconginize the panel in testing mode. Can't get it to rstart/run. I'm definately returning this product if no solution is found in the next few days! Not what I expected this Christmas from Fisher Price!. Try explaining to your daughter why Santa's gift is not working! IF I were Fisher Price I would make this resolution a priority, sounds like there are a lot of individuals out there having the same problem!

  • Anonymous Dec 26, 2007

Same thin, worked fine on day 1 on numrous occasions. Day 2 it wont work at all, tried the test software and all was ok on that.

Is there a way to run the program without pressing the on/off button?

  • alicialogue Dec 26, 2007

I'm relieved that it's not just me doing something wrong. I have uninstalled and installed about 10 times. And it still won't let me start it up. My monitor freezes up. I can't belive you spend so much time and money trying to get something that will encourage childrens' imagination and have this kind of problem. I tried calling the hotline and the recording tells me they have high volume on calls and to call back. Then it hangs up on me. I'm very dissapointed in Fisher-Price. Normally they have a very good product but I'm starting to change my mind.

Have same problem. Used the earlier solution to load. Copy to hd and then update the options. I can test but not start the console. Just has an error that sayes it has to close. I admit that I only have 32mb of video memory but tried a new card with 256mb and it still didn't help.

Similar issues here !!!..........Trying to install the software. At the end of the install wizard a message appears in a pop up window saying "DACSMiniApp.exe.Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id= 0xf40 (3904), Thread id = 0xc74 (3188). Called the UK helpdesk number on 01628 500303 and logged my issue - they said they had to wait for the US to become available and someone would call me.......no-one has called !!

        installed the software.

There doesnt seem to be a connection with the power button on the product.

Also, i went into My Computer, and thought i'd be able to set-up through there, as well, but the options that I got were to Modify, unistall or the recycle bin.

All loaded ok, checked all RAM, resolution etc etc, ok. Starts up goes to the intial screen to select what you want to do...from that point it will not work correctly....all the graphics are lousy. It looks as if it should be a problem with the video card but everything checked, all updates done and still no joy.

Any solution would be greatfully received..save me a trip back to Toyrus!

  • DaddyD Dec 30, 2007

DACS Started once - all except the paint wheel on the right, which never worked. We closed it from the windows task manager as suggested. Now it won't start again. I've tried using the software repair on the CD - no good. The console test function just loops and blinks the lights on the left side. The kids loved it when it worked and are very disappointed - hopefully a solution is found soon - Fisher-Price seems to have rushed this to market too soon, or perhaps the Grinch is involved.

The 30th of Dec and my daughters DACS (as Fisher Price call it) still isn't working...we spent hours on Christmas day trying to get it to work installing and un-installing the software and even trying to adjust the computer settings.
I am going to take this back with a print out of this page to let Toys R Us know about the amount of people with the same problem.
Thanks FixYa for letting me know ..its not just me with this problem!!

After a long install, it doesn't work at all. When the on button is pressed, a window is opened that freezes the computer. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling; same result. I have plenty of memory and a professional level graphics card running on XP. Similar to everyone else's problem. My 5 year old is sad, but this will be going back the store...

I have installed the software and encounter the same problem. The Fisher-Price website intended for updates tells me to come back later. I spent an hour on the phone with a Fisher-Price IT person who told me to try several things including updating my Directx but nothing seems to help. In the end I emailed a report generated by my computer to a higher up person at Fisher Price but never heard back from them. Has anyone been able to get this toy to run???

I have the same problem. It worked fine up until a week ago. It just stopped working. I've tried to uninstall the program and reinstall however, that does not work. The book says to go to the www.fisher-price.com/dacs/register website, but when you go there it just says "come back soon". And if you go to the fisher price website, you get no help there except to download the manual. Well, if you can not get the unit to work right, what good is the manual. I'm going to take it back to the store and get a new one to see if that one works.

I've gone to the site as directed. Still no resolution. I am disappointed. I expected more from Fisher Price.

On a previous computer, had the virtual memory problem even though it should have had plenty. The DACS was collecting dust until a new computer was purchased.

With new computer, appeared to install OK but application would not start with On button (orange button in back of console). Ran Console test (under DACS folder, under Utilities) and console tested OK, but when computer was rebooted, console was unresponsive even when the Console test was rerun. Unplugged and plugged in console into same USB port, and console began to work again.

Was able to get application to start with On button when console was plugged in after the computer had been started. It was as if the computer did not recognize the console if it was already plugged in. Not very computer savvy so not sure why or for how long this will last...

Same thing here, it worked for a little while now I get the DACSMiniapp.exe error. We should all sign a patition or something forcing Fisher Price to reimburse everyone that purchased this item. It is an awful big paper weight. I will never buy Fisher Price products again.

  • irishlas Apr 25, 2008

Hi Everyone - I have had the same problem since xmas - even took my laptop to PC World so they could look into the bios (not very teckie minded) and change the Vid Ram to 64mb.  Even they could not install it! My computer had all the requirements though.  So, my solution, well, take it back and go and get the VTECH KIDIPHOTO ART STUDIO, it's brilliant.  You use it on your TV it saves all the data, photo's art etc then you just plug it into your PC and print, share and so on.  It was £15 more but worth all the hassle of the DACS.  I have also e-mailed Fisher Price to tell them what hassle I have had and I suggest that everyone else should do the same.

  • Anonymous Feb 03, 2009

Couldn't get first one to install on 3 different computers (XP and Vista). Took it back for another which installed and worked as it is meant to...........until I tried to do the upgrade/update or install the extended software disks.......then I just get a blank white screen when the unit it turned on and have to go to task manager to kill it. I uninstalled and re-installed the basic software and works fine so long as i don't do any upgrades! Not exactly what you expect from Fisher Price.....

i have had all the same problems with dacs. no wonder it was on sale for $19 down from $50. it is basically a piece of junk that almost ruined my daughter's bday. i am so dissappointed in Fisher price it will be a while before i spend my hard earned money on them again.

Installed the program and got the update, but the update crashed at the "finish" screen. Pressed the orange on/off button and nothing happened. Uninstalled the whole thing, reinstalled it, did another update which didn't crash this time, pressed the orange on/off button and it worked. Played around with it for a while, then shut it off with the orange button and tried to use it on my daughter's profile - nothing happened. Tried to switch back to my profile and got a black screen - had to reset the PC. After the reset, pressing the orange button did nothing. Found the root program .exe and tried to start it that way. It got me to the password screen but it wouldn't recognize any of the buttons or the pen - had to force quit with ctrl-alt-del. I worked a tech help desk for several years so I know how to troubleshoot, and after two hours I can't get this product to work. The Fisher-Price website doesn't have any email addys listed, just phone numbers which I am leery of calling as it probably isn't domestic tech support. My five-year-old is going to want to play with her new birthday present tomorrow and I'm going to have to tell her it doesn't work.

I had the same problem of the console not being recognised and the software failing to install propperly. I run windows 7 professional 32 bit O/s and after many hours of the console not being recognised I came across a link at the fisher Price website. I downloaded the software as it describes and bingo...up and running.

hope this helps

Had same problem....this fix worked for me.Press Windows start button , click on RUN ,type MSCONFIG and click on OK.when the system config.page appears hit the startup tab, look for the DACSminiapp.exe entry and click on the check to remove it. hit the apply button and exit the system config. restart the computer When the computer restarts do a search for the DACS.exe application (686 kb file) right click on it,select copy,go to your desktop and right click and paste shortcut. to start the program have the unit connected and click on the shortcut to start the program, the yellow button on the unit still shuts it off. this has worked on my system for at least a week with no problems.

Same thing here ----
the kids are very disappointed and I am very frustrated. I tried the Console Test Application that was suggested but according to that -- the problem is NOT with the console. Even though the claim is made that it is compatable with Vista - I am begining to think it is NOT!!!! We have gotten thru some applications (arts/crafts) but not many at all. Half the time the screen just freezes and turning it on and off is not use. I have to continue to kill the program thru the task manager. I uninstalled and reinstalled the program but that didn't help. I bought the Barbie and Diego expansion disks and loaded them - I can not even find them or there projects. I think it may be time to retuen and wait till they figure it out. I recommended to my family and friends - who I have called some (and have the same issues) and some I have left messages to just return it and but their children something that actually works.

Thanks to all the that posted their solutions here. Here is what worked for me:

1) Run msconfig.exe and remove the DACS tray app.
2) Restart the computer, so the tray app is not running automatically anymore.
3) Turn off Windows firewall completely.
4) Use this program to start the application: C:\Program Files (x86)\Fisher-Price\DACS\NewDACS.exe
5) Create a shortcut to this app on the desktop or Quick Launch or pin it to the task bar.
6) Run the DACS app once (assuming the unit is already connected via USB).
7) Your console should automatically light up and the pointer should work.
8) Press the yellow button on the unit to confirm that the app closes when you do so.
9) Turn on Windows Firewall back.
10) Run the DACS app again and verify that the app works even with the firewall turned on.

Hope this works out for you...

I had the same issue, uninstalled and reinstalled many times and the software still wouldn't start. I finally disabled my firewall and it works fine! After it worked, I put the firewall back on and had to add the DACS program and the dacsminiapp.exe from the Fisher Price folder to my Firewall's Exceptions and all is good.

When I initially installed this, I set up a user account for my daughter after the software was installed. It then wouldn't work and I got all kinds of errors. I then discovered that it will only work in the account it was initially installed in. I also keep it unplugged until my daughter uses it. So far it has worked great for over 6 months.

The download website is up at:

I have this hardware too. I tried it first on my Vista on my Desktop, it said that it did not detects the hardware. Then on my XP laptop, same thing. Then I realized that those OS were french, hmmm can it be that ? After 15 years of using french os I finally found a software bad enough to be language dependant, and do not find the hardware? I tried an english XP, a fresh new install, and it found the hardware so I was able to install it.

Then, I have to make the software work. There is not "start application" icon like 99.9% of other applications have, that's a very bad start... So let's push this yellow button. The application starts. I see the FIsher Price logo, after that I see the DACS logo, with animations. What, animation without sound? is it possible ? hmmm I was supicious. Then after, a white screen. Full white screen, and nothing more. I had to do ctrl-alt-delete to load the task manager and kill the application. After that I discovered that I also had to reboot to make my keyboard runs normally.

I called them. They sent me a fix to be able to install it on a french OS. Imagine, I have to remplace a dll in the temporary windows file during setup !!! What a user friendly fix !

Now after 3 attemps on 3 differents computers, with always the same result (the white screen after the initial welcome), I do not know what more can I do.

I can't believe that someone on earth make it work.

And, where's the software update on the dacs support site ? always display "downloads coming soon" !!!

Finaly got it to work on my old computer which is an Xp (not vista as i originaly tried) has a 128DDR graphics card. It took ages to instal but finaly it worked. Personaly I think that its a design fault - Only designed towork on one type of setup, without even considering vista. I hope that the with bring a patch out soon that it will work on my vista.

I continued to receive the failed install error message advising that I did not have 64mb of video ram. This occurred on two computers, one with 64mb and the other with 128mb of video ram. I went through the roof and kicked everyone out of the house. I finally got it to work on both computers and have not had a problem yet. Here's what happened.

I had created a new user account for my 5 year old using Windows XP. I gave her administrative options so it could be installed. I did this on both computers. Neither worked on her new user account. Out of sheer frustration I decided to attempt an install on my account and it worked. It worked on both computers. I hope this works for you.

If it doesn't my next step involved a class action law suit and letters to the Federal Trade Commision. I've never had such a hard time installing anything much less any problems with Fisher Price.

Tried the first one on Boxing day, initially it told me I didn't have enough graphics memory ( on a geforce 64mb card). Got it to load eventually after about 10 attempts, worked once, then nothing.
So, I uninstalled the software, and it wiped half my other programs of the PC with it. Thank God for system restore !
I now have a second dacs, and it keeps telling me the software needs "debugging". But the e-link doesn't exist ????!! What sort of customer service is that ?
Looks like it's another product rushed onto the market in time for Xmas, without going through the proper testing first.

Tracked down an issue with it not starting or restarting using the 'button'.

The dacsminiapp.exe running in the toolbar keeps checking for updates and that interupts the prog while it's doing it.
There isn't a registration/update site yet as many will discover, so the app is locked into a loop for a while.
Once it's finished you can start the application etc from the button.
Any other issues are generally graphics and checking you are running at 1024x768 32 bit with dx9.0c will solve most of those.

A couple of points.

Got it to load when you push the button and turn off...
BUT it won't turn on again without a reboot.
Temp solution was to go into the prog file and drag a shortcut of the dacs.exe to the desktop.

I've found the REAL problem is with the dacsminiapp.exe, each time you load the prog [at boot up? or whenever you shut it down] it tries to check for updates.... but the update site isn't working and it's stuck in a timed loop.
If you wait lonf enough abd pass your mouse pointer over the tray icon you'll notice it stops showing 'checking for updates' and the prog will work again.
I think the main problem is the update/registration site not being there so this application stalls!

I have had the same problem. I am very disapointed in this product. Nothing like explaining to an excited 31/2 year old that it is not working.

At the very first screen turn off the password protection and then it works fine.

It then turns off and on as it should.

At least the kids can play until they fix the password issue.

Hope this makes a lot of kids happy!

Happy New Year.

Hi all frustrated fokes out there who still have problems installing and running this new product.
We bought this too for our dissabled daughter and have found it will not work on her pc , but will work on all the others in the house ..grrrrrrrrrr...lol.

What i did find was you must have net framework 1.1 installed and updated min for the software to install . other wise it will try to install the net framework 2.0 from the disk. the net framework 2.0 is an update from 1.1 and much software that requires net usage needs this base framework.

this is the spec of the pc it do work on ...and yer it well over the min requirement

System Information
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254)
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Page File: 392MB used, 3547MB available
Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

The pc it will not work on only has 256mb memory, and a 128mb graphics card. Buy the time windows boots up and all the other programs also are running there is not enought memory spare to even launch the system. So a min of 512mb installed is required on a xp system

Another point i found was when i inserted the usb windows did not register it so following the install instruction very carefully ..eg start to installing the software and when it says to insert the usb cable do so then .

When you do get it working , your keyboard and mouse will not function, only ctrl+Alt+del will to interrupt the program . The pen will be your mouse thought i'd better say that cos it fooled me at first ..lol ..

Hope this helps ...

heya Somer..it definitely is a video card issue. First you MUST have at least 75meg ram. Next, try this:

1. Bring the "Display Properties" dialog window (right-click on the desktop, click on Properties)
2. Click on the "Settings" tab. (make sure your screen resolution is set to 1024 by 768, and the color quality is 32 bits)
3. Click on the "Advance" button (this will bring a new dialog box)

On the newly opened dialog box:
4. Click on the "Troubleshoot" tab
5. Set the "Hardware acceleration" to "Full" (drag the slider all the way to where it says "Full")
6. Click "Apply", then "Ok" (this will close the dialog box)
7. Close the "Display Properties" dialog window by clicking on the OK button.

Try turning the toy ON now. If it doesn't work, try lowering the Acceleration to as low as possible.

Maybe you can make your kid's own ID on the computer so they can log in to this and not bugger up your own log in.

I hope this helps.

SOURCE: I can not find the

We have the same problem, I just now ordered online. Go to service.mattel.com and type in the product # (on back of studio, mine was L1152). The CD will cost $1.34 and we paid just over $7.00 to ship. I have not been able to find anywhere else to get CD so if you can't find download either try this. I believe it said it would ship in 7-10 days. Hope this helps :)
