I have the same issue, just last week it stopped working i bought this camera 3 months ago in january of 2008 and in april it stopped. The screen wouldn't come on nither any of the buttons worked, even the reset buttton didn't work. Good thing I had warranty, so I sent it back for repair let's see what happens next.I have the same issue, just last week it stopped working i bought this camera 3 months ago in january of 2008 and in april it stopped. Have you tried the 'Menu' button? If you've turned off 'Review' in the settings menu, the screen doesn't show anything after you take a picture. If the screen doesn't come on when you push the 'Menu' button with a charged battery installed, your camera will need to be repaired.

Do you get the 'push shutter button again' or 'turn off and on again ' message? If so the motor in the SQ unit that charges the shutter and moves the mirror up and down has failed. A very very common problem. The part is on constant back order at Nikon, and good luck getting it anyway as Nikon is going to stop selling parts to anyone in just a few weeks.
The D40x works as SLRs have worked for half a century. You have to compose the picture through the viewfinder. The LCD screen is for menus, settings, and reviewing pictures after they've been taken. The LiveView capability allowing you to compose on the screen is a relatively new development, which Nikon introduced into their cameras with the D3 and D300, introduced years after the D40x.
Sorry if that wasn't the answer you wanted to see, but that's the way the D40x works.
If your LCD screen works normally as a viewfinder and lets you review photos then your shutter is likely stuck in the closed position. If the display is black in all modes your LCD display is bad. Unfortunately, there is no safe DIY fix for either problem. The camera will require professional repair.
The D40x is not capable of Liveview - i.e. looking at the LCD to take a picture. You are mistaken.
If you want Liveview, you need to buy the D3 or D300 cameras. The D40x is an entry-level camera.
Have you tried the 'Menu' button? If you've turned off the 'Review' feature in the settings menu, your LCD screen won't show anything unless the 'Menu' button is pressed. If it doesn't come on when you push 'Menu' with a charged battery installed, your camera will need to be serviced.
