Once you've purchased a replacement mirror glass based on your specific make, model and year simply follow the steps below:

  • Remove all existing glass from the mirror head's plastic inner platform (backing plate).
  • Clean backing plate with rubbing alcohol. Clean back of replacement mirror with Burco Window Glo or other glass cleaner.
  • Apply the Burco Redi Stick adhesive patches and or silicone/urethane to the replacement mirror's back or to the backing plate itself.
  • Align and press replacement mirror to the backing plate.
  • Clean the installed Burco Redi Cuts mirror with Burco Window Glo or other urethane-safe glass cleaner.

    d. First, the tools you will need include a 1/4" drive ratchet with a variety of sockets - 1/4", 5/16" and a wobbler and a 3" extension. A large flat-bladed screwdriver is necessary to pop the triangular shaped trim piece that covers the interior-access nuts. Some electrical tape will come in handy to hold the nuts so you don't drop them into the door, never to be seen again. Also, a piece of flexible wire - a thin piece, is nice for holding back the power cords.
The outside element is fits throught the door with three projecting studs, and is retained by three nuts. You will also have to contend with the power cable for the motor, and possibly heat, if so equipped. Power only is a 6 head pin while power plus heat is an 8 pin head.
Now you're ready for the fun part, especially if you do NOT have 6" fingers that are 1/4" in diameter....
First, take the screwdriver and gently pop one side (doesn't matter which) of the triangle shaped trip which covers the interior area of the mirror assembly.
Next, using the wire or tape, grab hold of the power cable on the inside the truck side. Anchor it to the door or tie it off so that the cable cannot drop into the door panel. Separate the two sections of cable - one to the truck side, the other to the soon-to-be-gone mirror side.
Next, using the ratchet backed up with a piece of tape to catch a falling nut, reach in and remove TWO of the nuts from the bottom of the three that are there. Take a breather - you will need it while you perform the blind removal of the third, and last nut. First, make sure that the outside mirror is taped or ziplocked into position. Once you loose that third nut, it is going to want to follow the law of gravity and go somewhere. You have to prevent this or bye-bye nut. Having a helped do this is OK, IF YOU HAVE A GOOD HELPER. I have found better service from a piece of duct tape or zip-tie; you make your choice.
Once that third nut is out, the mirror is ready to spring free. Give it a tug-n-jiggle and out it should come.

By now you should check the operation of the replacement mirror BEFORE you install it. There's few things more frustrating than to install a dead part perfectly! Assuming the mirror responds right, you are ready for the finale. (I mention this part because I once installed a power only mirror into a Tahoe LT with HEATED mirrors and didn't realize the connectors did not "connect" until AFTER i had installed the mirror, tightented the nuts, and...you get the picture.
That's the "remove" part, now for the "replace". Guess what, it's the opposite of "removal", but with some warnings. First, Remember to connect the power cable! Also, use tape to seal the nuts into the socket before you try to spin them onto the studs. These are small nuts, on the end of a wobbly extension or flex-drive, and it is easy for them to pop off the stud and down into the door. A bit of tape or putty in the socket will keep them in there until you have them on the studs and snugged. When you are removing the socket from the nut, be extra careful that the socket does not come off the extension and drop into the door.
Finally, check out the operation of the mirror and pop that trim piece back into place.

Thanks you for asking your question? I would be glad to help you.
The issue that you are having with this mirror is called separation. It's caused from the silver nitrate backing on the mirror pulling away from the glass. This is a common occurrence in some GM mirrors. Unfortunately the only solution is to replace the glass in the mirror.
You can either purchase a new mirror from the dealer, or you can purchase a used one from a junk yard. However, you may have the same issue with a used mirror in a short while. There is one other option. Some parts stores sell replacement glass with adhesive backs that you can place over top of the existing mirror. It's about 1/3 the price and works just as good!
You may find that GM will only sell the whole mirror assembly and not the glass, if this is the case it will be a fairly expensive repair, from between $90 to 200 for the mirror it self depending on if it's manual or electric and has heat and turn indicator.
Should you need further assistance in the installation of a new mirror please feel free to contact me.

If the mount is still on the glass, loosen the set screw that holds the mirror to it and slide it off. If the mount fell off the windshield, you can get special glue to re-attach it at any parts store for around $10.00 Key to replacing it is to mark the correct position on the outside of the glass with a crayon and to make sure the windshield is very clean where you are re-attaching. follow the package instructions exactly and make sure you hold the mount in place without sliding it around, till it has adhered. Don't hang the mirror for at least twelve hours. While the mirror is removed, lube the pivot joints so it will adjust easily to avoid pulling it off the windshield again.

SOURCE: replace drivers side mirror 2001 chevy

To just replace the mirror glass there are a few different styles, but they all pull off. I suggest you wear gloves and glasses. Get a grip behing the glass and pull out. You should see a round circular bracket in the center. The new mirror just snaps into the bracket. Center new mirror and push evenly in the center of glass until it snaps into place. Dont push in by holding the edges, you'll break it. If you don't see the circle or it comes off with the glass it was too damaged for just glass. Power or manual mirros differ inside, but the mirror replacement is the same. If you mean the entire mirror only, remove door panel. Lower window, remove electrical connector if power, remove 3 bolts attaching mirror to door. Remove.

You don't really need a #. Go online, punch in your vehicle and ask for mirrors. You'll probably find 1000's of people that want to sell them.

Replacing side view mirror, pulling off side door panel.

You'll need to remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge
