Close the lid, attach an external monitor, reopen lid.

I'd try adjusting your setting in
Apple menu
System Preferences
Trackpad.

Not sure what key combination can affect those settings.
If that does not help try resetting the PRAM and or the SMC.

I had the same problem..... turns out that there is a specific order that you need to plug them in. Disconnect your speakers from usb and from power. Then plug in the Power first. Then plug in the usb connection. They should show up in your sound control panel now.

Sounds like the cutout switch in the output jack is stuck open, it is a techy fix sorry (at least it is not a board failure)

go to control panel and find out what brand and modile your sound card is ten go to the manifactures website and download the drivers for that sound card but note unistall the sound card from the device manager first then once you have the drivers downloaded restart your computer and let windows find the driver for you if it says it cant find the driver install it manualy from the location of wich you saved that driver software you downloaded and the problem should fix itself

I am having the same issue wd external drive on my mac book pro and also a seagate 
they both work intermediately on a firewire
