Keep getting error code 23 when trying to start mixer

Artisan mixers do not "switch". The food processor gets power from the power take off (PTO) shaft under the cap on the front of the mixer and the mixer gets power through the gear box. Both get motor power all the time all the time.

To "switch", take the bowl and beaters off the Artisan. Remove the PTO cap and install the food processor. Tape up your sleeves so the mixer drive does not grab your blouse. Turn on the mixer (as usual), adjust the speed (as usual), and process away.

You have possibly blown the fuse gear. Need a bit more info on the noise. If you turn it on slow and help the planetary does it try go get itself going?

It sounds like it could be a possible stripped gear. You could have a bad attachment drive gear or bevel pinon gear.

I'd say you're most likely overloading the mixer. This mixer, and others similar in size, are frequently overloaded by people making pizza dough. If you are making dough, keep in mind the A-200's capacity is 9 lb. of 40% A.R. pizza dough, mixed for 5 minutes maximum. If you need to mix longer, the batch must be cut down even smaller, but I don't even know if you're mixing dough.

Try running the mixer unloaded (i.e. nothing in the bowl) for ten minutes or more and see if it gets hot. If it still gets hot, the motor's start circuit (varies depending upon age of the A-200; Hobart used numerous motors in the A-200 over the years, incorporating different starting circuits) most likely has problems. If it doesn't get hot when operating unloaded, then you're probably overheating the mixer by overloading it.

Hi TRADESGIRLS, you are correct, the brushes have to seat correctly on the armature’s commutator or you won’t get any ‘juice. Unfortunately, the ‘screws’ on the sides of the mixer are just the Brush Holder Caps (brush cover), which allow you access to the brush holder assembly and has nothing to do with ‘adjusting’ the brushes. From what done already, still I suspect that one or both of the brushes is (are) not seated properly.
The brushes need to be installed so that they both seat correctly on the armature's commutator. See the illustration below:

I'd suggest removing them again and making sure the concave contact face rests completely on the armature’s commutator. If you've turned it 90 degrees too much, it won’t seat properly and you get no power to the motor.
It would also be helpful to have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.

Turn to pages 6 & 7, titled “Motor And Control Parts”, which provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer’s electrical components, along with all the parts. Locate Illus No 32, Brush holder assembly that includes Illus. Nos. #18, 21, 22, 23 & 31, and Illus. No. 19, Brush & Spring assembly respectively.

Your mixer may still be good, let it cool down and then check it out, If it runs OK then there is no problem. The motor in your mixer probably over heated from trying to mix bread dough which will make any mixer work hard. These mixers will get warm when over worked but unless heavy smoke was coming out and you were getting a burning enamel smell it is probably OK. Let it cool and try it but I suggest you not use it for bread any more.

I know what these codes are: code 19 is that phase c is over current fault and code 23 is a motor stall fault.I would start by making sure you 3 phase wiring going into the mixer is there.I service these mixers as im a service tech for hobart.these units are very detailed and i can walk you thru some things to check but if you have an electrical problem you most likley will have to call a hobart service tech because we have special equipment to diagnose the fault.let me know it may be something simple as these mixers are usally maintenance free.
