Blown highlights with D90 body and nikkor lens

I have bought my D90 body only and i am using the 35mm F1.8 Nikkor lens with it. I have a problem with highlights that is blown out a lot , someone i know shoots with the same lens and the D300 body and there is a day and night difference in the exposure .The d300 captures the light correctly but the highlights are blown out on the d90's shots . I done a shot yesterday in the shade under a tree and aperture and shutter priority and manual on girl with a white dress .seems to be very overexposed when i try a depth of field like f5.6 or lower .The shots was done in the middle of the day.i had to shoot f11 or up for highlights not to be burned. Can you please tell me what is the cause of this.the same day i done a shot of grass on a farm in the morning at about 9am , no light was shining in the lens f4 or 5.6 in aperture priority and lost contrast and burned highlights occurred.

Problems using Nikkor AF 35-70mm F3.3-4.5 with Nikon D80?

The sensor on the D80 is smaller than a piece of 35mm film. This means the camera will only use the center portion of the image cast by the lens. This reduces the angle of view, effectively increasing the focal length. The 35-70mm will give you an angle of view similar to a 52-105mm lens on a film camera. Likewise the 70-210mm lens will give you an angle of view similar to a 105-315mm lens.

What is best lens to photograph kids for headshots and 3/4 to full body shots with the nikon D90? the best lens for between $300-$500?

One of the best portrait lenses for the Nikon D90 is the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens which can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-50mm-Nikkor-Digital-Cameras/dp/B00005LEN4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298955171&sr=8-1. At low f-stops the lens blurs the background beautifully and will really make the pictures of the kids pop. An added plus is that it can take great photographs in low-light situations. It only costs $125 as well.

That's the Nikon error message for a lens with aperture ring set to something other than the minimum (i.e. highest number).
The camera insists on controlling the aperture ring, and to do so, the ring must be set to the minimum setting.
Unless it is a "G" lens, which has no aperture ring whatsoever.
The camera body sets the aperture of the lens wide open while auto-focusing, and displaying through the viewfinder. When it comes time to flip the mirror up and take a picture, the camera dials the aperture to the setting you (or the camera) have selected.

Is Nikon D90 camera compatable to use on below mentioned lens

Yes. The lens will autofocus and meter properly on the D90. Be aware that the D90's DX sensor will give you the same field of view that a 105-315mm lens would give you on a 35mm film camera.

I have a D90 Nikon, I mounted my Nikkor 50mm 1.8d

Make sure you set the aperture ring on the lens to its smallest setting (largest f/number) and lock it. Without doing so, the lens will not communicate properly with the camera and thus you will not get the autofocusing.
