No audio on my newly installed xp software

Do what the other one above suggested if that does not help go to device manager uninstall the driver then restart computer that should fix the issue if still does not work this go back to device manager and uninstall the driver and then manually install the driver you downloaded from the website(make sure its the correct driver)

Have you installed the software intended for windows vista?

You need to install the vista version of the software your cd might have drivers for xp and older

here is the vista software required

click on that link above this text.

1) Go to: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Audio tab
2) Check what's under "Sound playback: Default device". If these fields are grey and non-clickable, then most probably the audio card driver is missing or less probably the audio card itself is broken.
3A) If you have an original CD of your computer, motherboard, or audio card, insert the CD and install the driver from it.
3B) Or alternatively insert the CD and go to: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System > Hardware > Device Manager, find any unidentified device in the list, or expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" branch, identify the Audio card > Right click > Update driver... > Install the software automatically > Next
3C) Or alternatively download and install a free driver updater software, e.g. http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/index.htm - let it scan and update all your missing drivers.
P.S. These steps mentioned above are for Windows XP, but will be quite similar on other Windows versions, too.

Try installing the latest drivers from the website. To download:
1 Go to hp.com 2 Click on Support and Drives 3 Enter your product name or number, in this case just type in Officejet 8500 All-In-One 4 Hit go 5 Choose your operating system 6 Hit Next 7 Click on the link that says Driver - Product Installation Software 8 Save it to your desktop
But before Installing the Software, use the Disc that came with the printer so you can do an L3_Uninstall first.

To go for an L3_Uninstall:
1 Go to My Computer (XP), Computer (Vista and Win7) 2 Right Click on the Driver CD, The one that has the HP Logo 3 Open Util 4 Open CCC 5 Double Click on the icon that says Uninstall_L3
The Uninstall will prompt you to restart the computer once it's done. After doing so, Install the newly downloaded software.
Try scanning again, I hope this worked. :)

You can download the drivers from the Compaq/HP WEBsupport/download page. Make sure you select your model laptop and the XP orVista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them. Click onthis link to download the drivers: -

1) Go to www.devicedoctor.com
2) Download, install and then run the software
3) Click scan and it should pick up the missing drivers
4) Download and install the missing drivers

is your machine installed a software that freeze all existing data if so remove that first in-order your newly software installed be save.

You need drivers,if you know someone with the same make of of your laptop.You can make a copy of their audio software that are installed on their laptops.Then you instal on your Laptop.I had done this several times and it works well.

It looks as though that model of Compaq has the Realtek High Def audio chipset - try http://tinyurl.com/6f793u for a download from the realtek site - it appears as if that desktop originally had Vista installed on it from Compaq, so the Compaq driver is probably too new for the older XP operating system. Vista already has the driver support installed.
If you do a fresh install with the XP software and driver pack, the default language will be English.
Try that.
