OK, first, since this is happening within your browser, I will assume you have broken something within it.. you may need to repair IE (if this is what you are using for your browser).
I suggest that you first reset it back to its default configuration..
Open IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab > Reset button on bottom (read the warning first so you know what you are going to loose)
If this does not work then try running a utiltiy called IEFix.exe, a general purpose repair utility for Internet Explorer which repairs Internet Explorer by registering it's core DLL files and reinstalls using the IE.INF file. you may have to download it from another system, and transfer it to your problem computer.
A friend of mine has it available on his site, since my website is now down for end of year repairs:

Let me know if this resovles the issue!
and have a Safe and Happy New Year!

The OS is not important, how do you read/write email? Are you using a mail client such as Outlook, Outlook Express, ThunderBird or are you web-based. Meaning you log onto AOL, Roadrunner, or such in your web browser?
Keep in mind that all web pages are not necessarily compatable with the browser you use. Some sites use what are called Active-X controls which are used only in Internet Explorer. The HTML coding slighly varies as well.
If you use Mozilla (Firefox, Sea Monkey, Communicator) you need to make sure your Java and Javascriptare enabled. In Firefox it would be Tools/Options/Content. Click box as needed.
The reason I asked about mail clients is that you can actually use these with web based email. Are you aware of this? Just call tek support and they will provide you the information if it is not available on thier website.
