Plug timer into outlet
Plug lights into timer

Timing cycle repeats each 24 hours
Use selector button to set timer
Timer must be reset after power outage or after unplugging timer.
Push selector button and choose one of following

F > Lights are OFF
O > Constant ON
1 through 9 > timer turns ON at dusk and turns OFF 1 to 9 hours later
d > timer turns ON at dusk and OFF at Dawn
1. through 9. > timer turns ON immediately and then turns OFF 1 to 9 hours later

Instructions. for HB51R timer

Check out the HB61RC manual from Intermatic, here. I can't find an HB51R manual, but hese devices look very similar and probably operate the same way. I'll see if I find anything more - and will post it if I do.

If this works - let me know - thanks & good luck!

I have a Intermatic HB51R that does not turn on at all on any setting. I got from a friend and it was still in the original packaging with no exterior damage. My other Intermatic works like a champ.

I test timers.
A good percent of new timers arrive defective.
Others go bad within a year.
Some last quite a while.
Some good timers are bad later even when they haven't been used.
I almost believe these things are like car tires. Even if you don't drive the car, the tires wear out.

I think also that household circuits play a role in some defective timers.
Use a circuit analyzer from home center to test receptacle .. and try timer on different circuit.
Make sure light bulbs are working.

The HB51R has photo eye.
Photo eyes are delicate, and if timer was ever dropped, the eye might stop working.
Put black tape over photo eye and see if timer turns on.
If black tape doesn't revive the timer, then timer is defective.

Will the HB51R have to be placed outside to work on dusk to dawn.

The dawn to dusk feature is activated by photoelectric eye that senses when it gets dark.
If you put timer in a dark room, it will turn ON ... let's say to operate Christmas tree after you leave a room for the evening.
But if room stays dark, the timer will not sense when to turn off unless you also set timer to turn off 1-9 hours after ON.
That being said, a Christmas tree might make too much light for the timer's photoelectric eye.
Make sure photoelectric eye is turned away from direct light.

I have an intermatic HB51R. when i go to program it to stay on for a certain amount of time it turns the lights off as soon as i switch it away from the on position. Am i doing something wrong?

I don't think it is supposed to be in the "on" position when setting it up.
Turn dial to "off".
Then plug timer into grounded outlet.
Turn dial to 2, 4, 6 or 8 hours to run after dusk.
Plug in your outdoor lights.
Wait until dusk.
Let us know if this works.

My intermatic time HB51R flashes on and off when on the timer position (2,4,6, hours) it keeps the lights lit on the "on" position and "off" on the off position

I think the timer's photoelectric eye is getting too much light from the Load it turns on.
To check this, set timer at 2 hours, and then put black tape over the photoelectric eye so timer senses that it is dark and turns ON.
If timer does not blink with black tape, then problem is too much light with will cause on-off cycling of the timer.
If timer blinks with black tape over the eye, then timer is suspect. Exchange timer for another one.

HB51R is "on" all the time, regardless of control setting [email protected]

http://www.intermatic.com/products/timers/consumer%20outdoor%20timers/electromechanical%20timers/hb51rc.aspx

HB51 appears to be an automatic timer
Capacity is 1000Watts
Your lights are on so the circuit has power
I don't see any troubleshooting steps
It gives you a choice how many hours your lights stay on after dusk

You might try changing the selector to a different stay-on hour.
Turn timer off and unplug and then re-plug timer to see if it re-sets.

Otherwise, it looks like the photocell or 'timer brain' stopped functioning.
