well the CCFL tubes can fail at anytime ,for sure x10 the rate of the inverter card
if you upgraded XP to newer OS, then sure that happens, lacking driver for the GPU and controls (brightness buttons now dead)
no oS told nor if upgraded
nor if device manager bleeds with errors.
    The cause list.
    1: bad CCFL
    2: wrong drivers.
3: wrong OS loaded or done WRONG,
or out doors? dim? I guess indoors fails, but how could I know that?

rule #1 on PCs for sure laptops of any kind
you go to the HP.com site, find your model
or your OEM) and see you model page
see all OS it supports, many can go to Vista
but not higher and if you loaded w7 on it and hp tells you NO support guess what things fail
    even GPU controls,even bightness fails.
is bios dim too, not told this key test.
    HP.com ended all support
but here are disk sellers, for your lost disk day1 new 2003.

ZE5620US ( I can not vouch for zillions of disks like this) what you need is GPU full controls. and only HP drivers do that.)

On 6811's over time the contact wires inside of the base of the laptop become loose from their screws from opening and shutting of the laptop. Poor design open the case if you are familiar with computers and take a terminal cleaner and rough up the ends of the contacts then secure them tightly again making sure you gave them enough slack to close the laptop without strain on these wires.

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot an incorrect display on a monitor using the Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system.

IMPORTANT: The procedure below requires a user account with administrator rights.

NOTE: Some monitors must be turned on after the computer is turned on.
Degauss the monitor by turning the monitor off, waiting a few seconds, and then turning the monitor back on.

NOTES:
This may need to be done several times before a degauss is successful.
Some monitors may require up to 20 minutes between degaussings for an optimal effect.
Reset the monitor to factory defaults.
Configure the monitor in VGA Mode.

NOTE: Follow this procedure to reset a Sony® monitor.
Verify the correct monitor resolution is selected in Display Properties.

NOTE: If the monitor is a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube), it may be necessary to adjust the monitor refresh rate to eliminate flicker.
Ensure the color depth is at least High Color 16bit.
Remove any large electrical devices or speakers from the vicinity of the computer.

NOTE: This includes devices plugged into the same power strip as the monitor.
If using a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor, turn off any fluorescent lighting.
Disconnect and reconnect the monitor to the computer, ensuring there are no bent pins or broken connectors.

NOTES:
If using an available BNC connection for the monitor, ensure the 5 BNC connectors are in the proper order, red, green, blue, horizontal synchronization, and vertical synchronization.
For monitors which support both a BNC and a HD15 connection, ensure the monitor is configured to use the current connection type.
For monitors using both an analog and a digital connection, use only one connection type to the computer.
Wiggle the video cable where it connects to the monitor to ensure the cable does not have a short. If this causes the problem to go away and then come back, the monitor may need to be serviced.

NOTE: If a video pass-through card is used, bypass the video pass-through connection and connect from the monitor directly to the video card. If the problem is resolved the video pass-through connection may need to be replaced. Contact the manufacturer of the video pass-through hardware.
Remove any video extension cables.
Perform a monitor self-test to ensure the monitor is functioning correctly.

NOTE: Follow this procedure to perform a self-test on a Sony® monitor.
Try the monitor in a different room. If successful, suspect an EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) or AC voltage problems in the original room. A line conditioner can be purchased from a local retailer to help resolve voltage problems.

NOTE: A line conditioner is not guaranteed to resolve this issue.
Try the monitor on a different computer.
Perform a system restore to a time when the computer was functioning properly.
Restore the video drivers.

    pure bunk
    it is a 2003 laptop/notebook
not any kind of desktop at all and no CRT vacuum tubes period.

The backlight is probably failing if it is still flickering - does the screen start out pink/red when you turn it on?

The best way to tell is to plug in a known good LCD and verify it lights up properly.

Aspire One screen has gone dim.

Hi,
Inverter is inside the LCD Screen. Mostly at the bottom in the middle. To locate the Invertor, you have to take apart the LCD Screen by removing the LCD Frame, removing rubber pads & screws (depending upon the Model of notebook you have). Moreover, the cause of dim/ dark display could be the faulty lamp. So, I recommend that you check both the Inverter and Lamp.
Another likely cause is a bad connection of power from motherboard to the LCD. So first check the connectors/ wires for any damage before proceeding to replace Inverter of lamp.
For your convenience and idea about LCD Display, I have found a general link about CCFL replacement. Click here for detailed and graphical DIY instructions about LCD disassembly.
Make sure you take proper precaution while working inside LCD, as the inverter generates a very high voltage.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

Dim screen

Its going to be either the lcd or the inverter more then likely. Go ahead and unhook the lcd cable from the motherboard and the back of the LCD. Reseat the cable into the LCD and the motherboard. If its still dim then the best thing to do is to replace the LCD cause it comes with the inverter.

Monitor is dim

Sounds like your inverter is failing. The inverter takes the dc power from the battery and charger and converts to high voltage AC current for the backlight lamp inside the screen. When the inverter starts to fail, the display will sometimes blink, dim out over time, flash just get dark and stay that way.

Dim display on Toshiba Satellite 4090XDVD notebook

The backlight CCFL lamp provides the lighting for the LCD screen. If you have already adjusted the brightness to the max. setting and it is still dim, it means the CCFL lamp is is nearly worn out. To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions. Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp. Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case. The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills. Check out www.lcdparts.net for parts, repair service and DIY info.

My laptop screen is very dim, cannot read or see looks faded

Try using the brightness controls on your keyboard to brighten the screen. If that doesn't work then that means either the lcd or the inverter has gone bad.

MY A100 LCD SCREEN IS VERY DIMM WHEN VIEWING DVD howto brighten

You can brighten or dim the LCD screen by pressing the Fn key plus another key with the a sun symbol eg the UP & DOWN arrow keys or one of the F3 to F12 keys - it varies depends upon the model of the laptop.
If you cannot vary the brightness of the LCD screen the you have a faulty backlight.

Connect an external monitor to the laptop and power it up, if you see a clear image on an external monitor, this means your video card is OK.

If you see a dim image or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.

Hp laptop 9720us screen wont brighten or dim. last week my screen went blank brought it to a shop they changed the inverter and also some cable connection . works fine just not quite as bright as before ....

You got the wrong inverter fitted - i'm sure your unit requires a sinle lamp inverter and they have cheated - putting in a generic lamp inverter and branching togeather the wires to accomodate the single plug thus reducing the available volatage for the lamps - this is why it's dim - correct part is 431391-001 Display panel power inverter - For use with single lamp display panel

Screen on Aspire 3000 is very very dim

Backlight or inverter failure sorry to say. No telling which without substitution. Backlights are mostly built into the top of the screen and are tricky to replace. Inverters are generally sited at the bottom of the screen under the facia panel. Look around ebay for replacements

Dark scree

I too have the same problem with the same monitor.. tv looks great OSD looks great.. pc is dim.. This has nothing to do with the inverter board or the backlight.. I believe that there is an issue with the components that render the Computer video.
