Hot house,, effect on freezer temperature

My Mom keeps her house at 76-80 degrees in the winter. She tapes up every door and window so ther is no cold air coming in except when someone comes in to visit.
She has a one year old side by side fridge.
She complains that the icemaker "freezes up". and wont dispense ice.
My observation is ice frozen to the mechanism at the front sispenser hole.
She refuses to change the factory setting on the dials , saying that is what the manufacturer says to set the dials ,, no exceptions.
Temperature in the freezer when I check with thermometer is higher by about 5-10 degrees recommended freezer temp and fridge is at least 5-8 degrees above recommended food storage temp.
She refuses to change the setting stating that those setting are what she is supposed to use as set by the manufacturer.
I believe that the ice freezes to the blades in the front dispenser because the room is so hot! Therefore, no ice can come out of the hole.

How can I remedy this?
Thanks!

Cork....this is interesting. First, I'm going to suggest that you remove all the ice from the unit and clean it. Use a hair dryer to melt the ice and then make it dry. Reassemble. Many of these units allow you to remove the ice maker bucket. Don't forget to clean that up. There is a way on many of these units to turn off the ice maker...If you leave it too full, the defrost cycles will melt the ice together causing your problem. On my Kenmore, I keep the bucket about half full. Generally, the preset temp should be 40 in the fridge and 5-10 in the freezer. If either of these is warmer, you have shorter food life. By the way...Mom will feel warmer if she has a humidifier in the house. Get the cold vapor type.

How do I keep my refrig/freezer from defrosting in the winter when store in the garage.

There is only one source of cold in many refrigerators. If yours is a top freezer, then most likely it is in the freezer.
But the thermostat that you set temperature with is in the refrigerator, not the freezer.
In the cold garages, what can happen is that the refrigerator stays cold enough that it does not call for cold. So the freezer does not get enough cold.
The freezer control works by diverting cold air into the freezer WHEN THE RERIGERATOR HAS TURNED ON THE COOLING. If it is not turned on, oh well.
The best you can do for this is to put both on max cold. Then the refrigerator will call for more cold at a lower temperature, and the freezer will get it more often and will divert more when it is cooling.
This can result in the refrigerator freezing things too. You can try raising the refrigerator setting JUST A LITTLE and see if both work, but keep freezer on max cool.
This works for my situation, but ambient temperature fluctuations in the garage make this dicey. We don't put things like lettuce in the refrigerator in the garage in the winter because freezing damages them.
Good Luck

Freezer turns of in cold weather

Many residential refrigerator / freezers are designed to work at temperature considerably above above freezing. Most modern refrigerator / freezer have a single electric thermostat - located in the fresh food compartment. This lone thermostat will control the compressor to keep the fridge (fresh food) section at the desired temperature (usually between 34 - 38 degrees F). The freezer will get colder regardless of how cold it is already whenever the fridge thermostat turns the compressor on.

Now that you see how the thermostat works, let's look at what happens when the fridge is placed in an unheated space - like a garage. In winter time, the temperature can drop considerably below 38 degrees. If the outdoor temperature remains cold enough, for long enough - it will affect the thermostat in the fridge. The temperature inside the fridge could drop below 38 degrees, preventing the thermostat from telling the compressor to turn on. Meanwhile, the temperature in the freezer compartment slowly rises from the normal -10 to 0 F degrees. It will continue to rise until it is the same temperature as the fresh food compartment or until the thermostat in the fresh food compartment tells the compressor to turn on again. This means the freezer contents will thaw.

If the temperature in the garage is even in the 40 to 50 degree range, the loss of cold in the fridge may not happen often enough to keep the compressor coming on often enough to keep some freezer items frozen solid - such as ice cream. Remember, water freezes at 32 degrees F, other products may require lower temperatures to remain frozen, and could thaw at 28 or other temperature.

Good luck!

Would like to put older side by side refrigerator in our garage. I was told in the winter, when it gets cold the freezer side will not keep foods frozen. I had an older top freezer refrigerator in the...

It could be a problem depending on how cold your garage gets in the winter. Most refrigerators depend on the compressor turning on to cool the freezer section and that cold air is used to cool the refrigerator section. If your the temperature in your garage gets in the 30-40 degree range in the winter. The compressor may not turn on sufficiently since the refrigerator is typically around the 35-40 degree range. This will cause the freezer to warm up to the fridge temperature and your freezer items will defrost.

I have a Frigidaire refrigerato with top freezer that I keep on the back porch. The freezer has quit working completely. The temperature has been below freezing lately and I was wondering in this has...

Good day,
Yes, Frigidaire specifically states any temperature below 55 degrees will unbalance the machine causing the freezer to warm.

This is due to the fact that the thermostat that runs the entire machine is located in the fresh food section. When it reaches it's normal temperature it shuts the entire machine down.
In cold weather it could stay off for the best part of the dy, if not the entire day.

As well. on some model Frigidaire's, they makes a winterizing kit.
It is wired to the thermostat in a manner that heats the thermostat artificially in cold weather to cause it to cycle more.
Contact your local appliance parts house to see if they carry the kit for your machine.

Not keeping cold temperature and can smell plastic from heat

Sounds like the condenser fan motor is either jammed or has failed. if you wil pull the refrig from the wall and remove the lower compartment cover you will see the fan I'm reffering to as well as the condenser coil and compressor. if the fan has failed you can put a house fan blowing into this compartment to keep the unit operational until you can get it repaired. thanks for using FixYa Peyton

Freezer doesn't freeze in winter?

Domestic refrigerators nowadays are designed not to operate at temperatures less than 45 degrees. First, if it's 45 degrees in the house, people probably are not living there. 2nd, 45 degrees keeps food refrigerated. 3, if people are not living in a space, then they don't need to keep frozen food.

This is a result of the changes in refrigerants we've been going through since 1992.
If you want an outdoor freezer, buy one, and make sure it's designed to be used in a non conditioned space.

Freezer and fridge stop working when home temp is cold

ketner1 what you are looking for is an old style freezer. They ran so hot that they didn't care what the temps in the garage was. Here is a suggestion. I am not sure what kind of freezer you have had, but look for one that doesn't have a coil on the back of it. Freezers with the condenser in the cabinet work well at the temps you are looking for, however they don't work well in garages at 90 degrees, then they just transfere the heat to the inside of the freezer. This is the style my parents use and theirs is in a storage shed with no heat.
