Some of the printing appears to be smeared. I am using a Lexmark X4850 and the cartridge is not low.

# Hold the cartridge upside down, with the bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper towel.
# Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead horizontally in one direction only (left to right).
# Continue doing this until it looks clean.
# Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure the ink is flowing.
# Next, look inside the printer and locate the carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not installed at this point.

1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the contacts at the back of the carrier.
2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than one swab.

# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap them correctly into the printer.

Did you replace the color cartridge with a Lexmark product or is it a off brand new cartridge or did you refill the cartridge yourself?

Hi...

Silly question, but I have done this myself. Have you removed the tape from the bottom of the cartridge?

SOURCE: using a refilled ink cartridge on a Lexmark x4850

Yes, most Lexmark cartridges as well as many other manufactures use something called 'Smart' Chips in the bottom of the ink cartridge. Usually unplugging your (about 10 seconds) printer resets the memory in the printer. Hope this helps!

Why does it smear when printing

It could be due to low ink levels in your cartridges. Make sure your cartridges have enough ink in them for printing.
You may also try adjusting the print settings to improve the print quality. From your software application, click File > Print > Properties / Preferences > from the Quality/Speed area, select Better or Best.
Print quality issues can also be due to dirty or clogged cartridge nozzles. Please follow the steps below to clean the nozzles:
  1. From the printer operator panel, press Copy.
  2. Press Options until Maintenance appears on the display.
  3. Press the right arrow until Clean Cartridges appears on the display.
  4. Press Select. A nozzle page prints, forcing ink through the nozzles to clean the clogged nozzles.
  5. Print your document again to verify that your print quality has improved.
I hope this information has been helpful.

My Lexmark X6170 is smearing all images that are about a third of the way down the paper. Everything else is printing fine.

Try to clean the cartridge nozzles using the printer control panel.
  1. Load paper.
  2. Press Copy.
  3. Press Options until Maintenance appears on the display.
  4. Press the right arrow until Clean Cartridges appears on the display.
  5. Press Select. A nozzle page prints, forcing ink through the nozzles to clean the clogged nozzles.
  6. Print your document again to verify that your print quality has improved.
Also, check your ink levels. Make sure your ink levels are substantial for printing.

My Lexmark 4800 version x4850 says there's a cartridge missing!

This can be one out of two things. Either a faulty cartridge, or the cartridge holder. If you still have the old cartridge, insert that one. If now it only displays 'Cartridge Empty', it means that the printer can see the cartridge, and it's your new cartridge that is faulty. If it's still showing Cartridge Missing, it's most likely your printer that is faulty. In either case, you should contact Lexmark Technical Support and they'll provide you with a solution.

You can also try cleaning the contacts in your cartridge Holder with a dry cloth.

Refill ink for Lexmark X4850

I have a couple questions for you.
1. Is your cartidge 42 or 42A? The 42 cartridge will not work if you refill it. I learned that the hard way after paying to have it refilled and I got it home and it would not print. If you are using the 42A refillable cartridge, your ink levels will not reset. I called lexmark to ask them after not bieng able to find any answers online. He said that because I am using the 42A, it will print but will not register the level. The only downside is I have to keep an eye out for fading so that I do not ruin the printer heads.

I hoped this helped.

Lexmark x4850. swapped oem with non-oem black cartridge. will not print black now. message says warranty does not support non-lexmark and prints blank pages.

“Lexmark does not support the refilling of its ink cartridges. Refilling the ink cartridges can cause them to leak, thus clogging or even damaging the print head. Any damage to your printer caused by refilled ink cartridges may not be covered under warranty”. Please use genuine Lexmark cartridges for best results.
