Cmos battery? I have a hp pavilion n3390 and it will not keep the date or time is that the cmos battery?  If so how do I get to it to change it?

  • onimonster Jul 06, 2008

I had the same problem. I had to *completely* disassemble the notebook to find the rechargeable Maxell button cell on the upper side of the main board. (Sorry, I can't remember the type at the moment!) The button cell is in a little carrier/holder which is surface mounted and I also found that one of the connections had broken, probably due to thermal expansion from the heat generated from the CPU. That requires extra soldering skills to repair, since the pads are very small and not easy to reach, and it is so easy to damage. Disassembly is complicated and it is very easy to damage or lose something if one is not very, very careful. For example, it is very easy to break the touchpad wiring and connector without even knowing it.

My computer clock doesnt keep time and will not syncronize with internet time

If there is no charge from the CMOS battery, or little charge even, you will notice your clock set to 12:00 and the date to Jan. 1 every time you start your computer. Your computer will also ask you where it should boot from when you turn it on. These are the most basic signs your CMOS battery is going dead and will be your ultimate test of the battery

Can i change cmos or rtc battery with out loosing any thing i have an s3300fpavilion slimline

Changing of a battery is not subject for loss of data because all a battery does is keep your time and BIOS dates and information intact not the hard drive which is opposite and is not powered by a battery. Hope this helps. John

Clock in computer will not maintain time and date

Yes it very probably is the CMOS battery, time is kept counting electric pulses, when the computer is turned on there is power and memory to do this, but when it is turned off it relays on the battery to keep this an some other settings, maybe you're receiving a warning at boot time. Check this guide for replacing such batteries:

Friend gave me an old hp pavilion xz1185 laptop, but he dont recall password for cmos to get in,can i reset cmos?

This may not work but give it a try.
Remove the BIOS battery and the main battery from the laptop for 15+ minutes. Insert the batteries back into the laptop and the BIOS will return to the default setup, hopefully removing the BIOS password. You need to go into the BIOS configuration to set the Time and Date etc. again.

Hi Rmellon,

I understand that your PC time and dates keeps changing. I suspect the issue is due to the CMOS battery. I suggest you to change the battery. It will not cost you much. I have included the link which clearly shows a video on how to change the real-time clock battery. Please getin touch with me if you need clarification. It is specific to your dv9000 model.

I am pretty sure it is due to the CMOS. Let me know whether it fixes your issue. If you don't wish to do the above you could also try the following
