Bad Motor I have purchased two of the Kenmore direct drive beltless systems with Progressive systems. The first died after a year, the vacuum motor start making a grinding noies. I pulled the side HEPA filter and could see a fine coating of graphite like dust. Took it to a vacuum repair shop. They said the brushes were going and thus the motor was shot. I liked the vacuum and bought a second, 1 year later the motor is making a slight noise that and removing the HEPA filter I find a slight metallic grey dust again. Motor tends to smell hot once in a while also.

With the cleaner unplugged, turn the unit over and look inside the opening where the brush is located. Do you see the clogging of the brush with lots of hair? If so, you will need to disassemble it to remove the hair. In any case, you will probably need to take off the cover to see if there is an obstruction jamming the brush. Also, check to make sure that motor for the brush is getting power. If there is an electrical cable on the outside connecting the brush housing to the rest of the vacuum cleaner, check if it is disconnected. When you have the cleaner on, do the lights glow? Do you hear the motor running? Try the above and report back.

There is no drive belt on a progressive drive vacuum. It is direct drive meaning it is attached via the motor. No vacuum means no air flow somewhere in the unit. Torn bag,Wrong bag, pluged filter under bag.Make sure the opening in the bag is the correct size,too big and it will not seal. Make sure when you close the housing it seals also. No housing seal no vacuum. Kenmore vacuums tend to be plastic housings. Cracks are comon in the wheel housing area. Check there first. Plastic expoxy will work with this fix if so needed.

I bought my parents the exact same model. Do you have the floor select switch "ON" for the brush? Did the overload protector switch trip? There is a little red button sticking out from the right hand side of the head. Check to see if it is pertruding past the cover. If so, push button in and it should reset.

most likely the brushroll motor which is located inside the brushroll. This machine is one of the worst designs produced by kenmore, usually the brushroll motor only lasts 2 to 3 yrs.

I just had the same problem - reset button didn't trip - cleaned the roller - ultimately found there is an override switch at the point where the hose attaches to the base of the vacuum - it disables the roller when you use the attachments. The hose had become loose (but not disconnected) enough to trip the switch. An easy fix after alot of tinkering... p.s. All those "experts" that said to change a belt obviously don't understand that this model is beltless...

Look for a reset button on the motor and press it in. If it clicks, then it was tripped. An excessive load on the motor can make the reset trip. Try turning the motor shaft to make sure that it is not bound up. Run the machine empty for a short time to see if it works. Good luck!

Remove the belt from your beltless vacuum and you should be golden!

If it is direct drive then the motor or the wireing to the motor are bad. If it is gear driven then the gears are probally stripped.

most likely if it dont turn on at all period.1 of 2 things on/off switch went out or 2 motor burned up but most time u can tell if it is bad motor cause if it smelt like burnt plastic ever bad news its dead but hopefully u can just change switch
