This printer sence I bought it new 7 months ago has been a great printer with great results and no problems with this printer even though I have used after market ink for it as I have for all my printers for many years without much trouble.
Today I turned it on and it said all of my ink cartridges were empty.
This could not be as I have replaced all of the cartridges within the last week.
I took all of them out and placed them back in and all showed fine but one which I took back out and placed back in and all again showed as empty.
I took the emptiest one and replaced it with a new one and it also showed empty along with the rest.
I took all of them back out and cleaned all the contacts with an eraser and wiped with a clean cloth and replaced all the cartridges and Still all showed empty.
I uninstall ed the driver and rebooted and with the new driver installed all still had the same results.
I replaced all the cartridges with a different brand of compatible ink and still the same results.
I then called Epson and they ran me through diagnostic. (everything I have already done),
and one last thing.
"What brand of ink are you using in your printer? Is it genuine Epson ink"?
No, I can't afford "Genuine Epson ink".
"Well, replace with genuine Epson ink and call us back and if it still does not work we will tell you what to do with it next."
I can buy a new R260 Epson printer for less then I can buy the "genuine Epson ink".
Anyone got any ideas other then the obvious?
HELP!!!
Thanks.
I went through 4 EPSON Printers because I liked the quality of the print-outs. I wanted to be loyal to EPSON but I have changed my mind. Continuously reading, that parts in my printer are at the end of theit life expectancy made my think again. EPSON Printers are of inferior quality mechanically.
I am now owner of HP printers, where I always get a new printhead when I insert a new cartidge, aftermarket, refilled or not.
Get away from Epson!!!
Using recycled ink cartridges in your inkjet printer is never a more economical way to do colour printing, unless you are willing to become a master technician on your particular product and have ready access to print heads and machine engine unit replacements, you will also need manufactures service software/website to reset waste counters/error codes.
It is expensive to print in colour full stop. Printing cost is at least 30cents inkjet and 10cents toner/laser per sheet
Laser b/w and colour is far cheaper per sheet, but setup costs are one time expensive but they are also a lot more reliable printing system.
Your machine will stuff up sooner rather than later when using non genuine consumable, and when it does it will cost more than the machines worth to even look for repair, so be prepared if choosing this road to purchasing a new printer every few cartridges if you are lucky.
If your using non genuine products and you want machine looked at by a professional the first thing you will need to do is install all genuine products in to your machine to allow correct fault diagnostics to be done, this is before any repair cost that maybe incurred.
Recycled/refills/aftermarket ink cartridge faults include – not recognizing ink, poor print quality, error codes, wont come to ready, erratic carriage movement, lines, waste counter issues and also paper feed problems, circuit board/connection faults caused by leaked ink .Not all faults are immediately apparent it takes time for the poison ink to replace that in the supply system then issues begin.
Cheap printing can be achieved using b/w lasers they cost less than 2 cent per sheet and have a brilliant reputation for print quality and dependability. Then if you need the occasional colour go to the shop, let them have the hassle, stress, time and expense of running the machines and the cost is still relatively cheap to you.
There are many consumers still printing with 10 year old laser machines, you would be extremely lucky to find a 3-5 year old inkjet.
If you must recycle well buy one that has already been proven to be adaptable to the concept, so that means go back to older units that went so clever.
Older Lexmarks, Epsons and HP were once easy targets, there was and is a lot of development gone into managing bulk ink deleivery systems, software has been cracked and parts can be sourced.
Inkmizer canon/epson bulk ink modified printers
Chipresetter be prepared for some frustrations and mess.
P.s. Most new machines come with starter inks that do not contain as much as new ones ussally 3ml instead of 5ml to enable cheaper selling cost, but also note that about 2ml of ink is in the tubes that run from ink carts to print head.
People that need to do colour printing like more than 8 pages a day, should be using full colour toner based print systems.
ie Oki, HP, Brother, and kyocera all have reliable systems
The pump wont solve the issue on this machine, this machine has smart cartridges that are identified by the printer and they keep record of how many dots have been printed with each cartridge, once the upper limit of prints has been reached the cartridge shuts down from the printer thus disabling printing,
Machine wants to see a new fresh chip on a unused cartridge to once again begin cartridge ink supply count.

Did you see the cleaning pump described by another writer? (Excellent
idea!!!) Look for it under "Epson Stylus Pro 4800" and if that won't
work get another printer. Get another printer anyway and keep the pump
handy;-)
I have an R280. The fist OEM cartridge to go low was Yellow. I replaced that one only. All others showeed between 50% and 33% full. Immediately after replacing the Yellow cartridge with a new genuine Epson cartridge the printer stopped printing and following diagnostics I found it now was telling me two other colors were in need of replacement. This is crazy. Epson ink already costs $500,000 a gallon and now they tell me a half full cartrdige has to be replaced??? I have a friend with an R260 who has similar experience. I think in their zeal to make people use OEM cartridges Epson has really screwed up an otherwise great printer to the point where it doesn't even recognize Epson cartridges properly.
Same problem with error. This is designed obsolescence. There is no such thing as "aftermarket ink" causing problems.
All the chips inks timers etc.. have one purpose. Greed. Do the math ink from the manufacturer is $5000 a gallon. THAT clearly states why they take such steps.
Why make a printer fail even if nothing is wrong with it (and there IS nothing wrong with it) thats easy. to force you to buy a NEW printer that uses a NEW style ink cartridge. No other reason.
On older model printers I "reset" the components inside your printer require service error DOZENS of times. not ones not twice DOZENS of times.
Waste ink? same thing reset DOZENS of times. I even took apart one once and yes the waste ink was all black but no where "near" spilling over or risking spilling over.
Quality difference? Bull. No difference. I do a blind test you will NEVER be able to definitively determine which was printed with original or aftermarket ink. I know I do photographs for a living. I have a good eye for this stuff and I can NOT tell any difference.
Magenta is magenta. this is not complicated stuff.
Replace the printer every few cartridges? I burn through 50-60 CARTRIDGES A WEEK. The life span of our printers (epson's and canon's) is measured in YEARS.
Hundreds and Hundreds of cartridges. My only impediment is DESIGNED obsolescence (these designed to fail errors) that I bypass. Otherwise the ONLY reason I replace a printer is #1 the print heads finally go and its too expensive or hard to find a replacement or I literally "physically" wear then out (drive motors pulleys rollers etc.. The most common is the paper intake mechanism just dies it can no longer "draw" in paper because I wore it out. thats after THOUSANDS of prints.
NO aftermarket ink will NOT hurt your printer. Refilling is a royal pita I hate doing it.
Hi
I also have an R260 printer and the same problem, the printers error message is that the cartridge is not compatible. I called epson and they sent me a cartrige genuine. Still the same problem. I really don't know what to do. My printer is one month after waranty and now I got to buy a new one. Sucks.
My epson stylus CX4600 just got its cartidges changed. The cartidge brand is LD any ideas why? And the printer is only about a year and its been great
Printer has been working fine and now it will not print at all. Â It is telling me that all inks are out. Â I know that is not true as they are all newly replaced.
How do I get this thing to work. Â I have disconnected both the usb and power chords and let it sit for a long while.Â
Nothing.
Please help. Â Tim Morse 508-481-7200
