I had the same problem with my 42FD5994. It was working fine, then one day I turned the TV on and the front light turned green for about 5 - 10 seconds and then the TV switched to protection mode (front green light is now red and flashing constantly). I did some research and found out the the power board is faulty. I ordered a DIY fix it kit on Ebay for around $55 (includes shipping). The kit contains 5 high temp capacitors and a new IC chip. It also comes with a good detailed photo of the circuit board the components that needed replacing.
I also spent $70 at Radio Shack for some soldering gear and went to work. It took me 3 hours to replace the 6 components. The IC chip was a pain to remove, but one that was out the rest went pretty smooth. I had to remove two extra blue capacitors in front of the IC chip to desolder some of the leads.
After I cleaned the board with Isopropal alcohol (99% pure) to remove the excess flux, I inspected the solder joints to make sure I didn't solder some runs together. All looked good.
Next I put the TV back together and hooked everything back up. I powered on the TV and the same problem as before. The TV went into protection mode. But this time I heard the speakers pop and the screen buzzed. So I pushed in the power button to reset the TV. Next, I turned the TV back on, but this time when the light was green, I quickly pushed the power button again to power off the TV. I tried the TV one last time. I powered the TV back on, and with the remote I turned the TV on. Viola! It worked. The TV powers on great, and works like a champ. I am guessing that the first time I tried to turn the TV on, the new components needed a minute to energize. I also started the TV cold, I should have plugged it in for a few minutes before I tried turning it on.
So, I was successful fixing my 42FD5594 with the DIY kit on Ebay. I ordered it from California. The company was great, and Everything arrived well protected. I figured if this didn't work, it was time to get a new TV anyway. I can save the $2000 for another day.
Soul45man, It looks like your tv has bad power supply board. It is common problem for 42fd9954. You can fix power board at ebcelectronics.com
I had the same problem plus others . Cost me $550 to get a new power relay. Got it home and whilst it is working, I am experiencing the turning of and red flashing light. Have been advised that it may be that the plasma cannot cope with the signal. Have yet to try it yet. I have been advised to lower the resolution from 1080 to 720.
Keep pressing the channel up/down button and the screen will come on it may take a few minutes dont use the switch on the side of tv just use the remote buttons u could try the power button on the remote aswell

Thanks for tryin, but i get nothing. The screen won't even turn on let alone let me change the channells, but i tried anyway's, both the cable channells and the tv channells. Let me re-explain the issue: About a week ago, I tried to turn on the tv with my remote, and the light would trun from a solid red light to a solid green light. 5-10 seconds after that it goes back to red and is flashing now and wont' do anything else. I would power down the plasma tv and power up, turn on the tv with my remote and it went back fine. Now a few day's ago, it won't come back fine at all. Tv is about 3 years and 5+ months old. It was fine the night before and no sign/smell to show any electrical issues.
Having the same problem, company here says they can fix for &175, Husch could you help me figure out what kind of capacitors I need and which ones they are on the board? Any help would be huge!
Exactly how husch noted what to get, what to fix, and even the part of turning it on. I went a step further and just plugged it in and left the red power light on for 5 minutes to see if the capacitors needed to charge up 1st. Sadly they did the exact same thing. Turn it on with the power button on the TV. Red light, then turn it on with the remote. Then green light for 5-10 seconds. Then red flashing light on the 1st run. Then I did what husch said he did, turn it on red light, use the remote to turn it on green light, then power it down at the tv while the green light was on before the 10 second mark (I did it around 3-5 seconds) Waited a few seconds later then turned it back on at the TV. The red light didn't come up instead the green light came up on the hard power and it came up like a champ. I also got the kit off of EBAY. Didn't have the poping or anything. Also when removing the IC Chip I just cut the feet off the chip and worked the solder with the leg pieces until the holes we're cleared and finished the job. It did take a while but was worth it!!!! My kit was bought from a Lake Forest, CA ebayer: Radio-2k
This is the second 50" plasma since Dec 2006 by Phillips. Last week it started to do the same thing as what was posted. I turn it on and the green light comes on, then a click and a red flashing light. I found that I have to kill the power to the TV (unplug it or shut off power to the surge protector) and wait a few minutes, then hold my breath and hope it turns back on when I restore power. It usually takes me between five and ten minutes to get the thing to turn on. Any ideas what is wrong?
Can we ask Phillips to work on this problem of flashing red lights
47LW5300 Power light goes from red to flashing red, then green/blue for a second then back to red
